Sift Kaur Samra, on Sunday, won the bronze medal in women’s 50m rifle 3 positions a day after home favourite Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar failed to clinch a podium finish in the men’s event at the ISSF World Cup in Bhopal.
Sift, 21, finished fifth in the qualification round - second among athletes not competing for ranking points only (RPO) - with a score of 588. Manini Kaushik, who had a forgettable senior World Cup debut in Cairo earlier this year, missed out on a place in the ranking round by five inner-10s. Olympian Anjum Moudgil dropped 11 points in standing to end 17 th.
In the ranking round, Sift was bested by Czech Aneta Brabcova, who eventually won the silver medal. China’s Zhang Qiongyue finished atop the leaderboard.
In the 25m rapid fire pistol event, Vijayveer Sidhu came closest to qualifying – among the Indians - for the ranking matches but fell short of the cut-off having registered nine inner-10s less than Frenchman and 2022 World Championship silver medallist Clement Bessaguet.
Zhang Jueming later sealed China’s eighth gold medal at the MP State Shooting Academy, failing to hit the mark only on five occasions in the eight five-shot series. In a nip-and-tuck affair, Bessaguet’s only miss in the final series cost him a chance to trigger a shoot-off for gold.
The final medal tally has India at second with seven, way behind China’s 12. Germany, with three medals, is third.
