Ramkumar moves into second round at Cincinnati

Ramkumar Ramanathan capitalised on a fortuitous entry into the main draw, and beat qualifier Christopher Eubanks of the U.S. 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of the USD 5,244,930 ATP tennis tournament in Cincinnati.

The victory, coming after he had lost the final qualifying round in two tie-breaks, helped the 22-year-old Ramkumar garner a minimum of USD 32,780 and 61 ATP points, including 16 for making the second and final qualifying round. Ramkumar had beaten Dusan Lajovic of Serbia in the first round of the qualifying event, and lost the second round despite not facing a single breakpoint in the match.

In the ITF men’s Futures in Thailand, Sidharth Rawat and Vijay Sundar Prashanth moved into the second round, but Sasi Kumar Mukund lost the first round in two tie-breaks. In the ITF women’s event in Thailand, qualifier Pranjala Yadlapalli made the pre-quarterfinals.

National champion Riya Bhatia lost the final qualifying round in the ITF women’s event in Germany, in which Ankita Raina has a direct entry.
