Davis Cupper Prajnesh Gunneswaran warmed up for the tough second round against top seed Mikhail Youzhny of Russia with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over qualifier Miliaan Niesten of the Netherlands in the $75,000 Challenger tennis tournament in China on Tuesday.
The former world No.8, the 35-year-old Youzhny has been competing in the Challengers, winning five of them in the last two seasons, including back to back titles last fortnight to reach a rank of 87. Youzhny had played Sumit Nagal for a tough three-set victory in the first round on way to the title in the Challenger last week in Ho Chi Minh City.
In the ITF men’s Futures in Kuala Lumpur, national championship runner-up Suraj Prabodh beat eighth seed Karunuday Singh in three sets. Arjun Kadhe battled for nearly three hours in beating Ken Onishi of Japan 6-7(3), 6-0, 7-6(3).
