India’s top-ranked men’s singles player Prajnesh Gunneswaran cruised into the second round of the Antalya Open ATP 250 tournament with a straight-set win over Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic on Monday.
The 94th ranked Prajnesh, the last direct entrant in the draw, served eight aces, to six by the 286th ranked Tipsarevic, and converted three breakpoints before winning 6-0, 7-6 in the first round.
The Serb was returning to the circuit with a protected ranking, after having lost the first round in French Open singles and quarterfinals of doubles.
Gunneswaran’s brilliant performance against former world number eight Tipsarevic would do his confidence a world of good ahead of the Indian’s second round clash against Itay's Lorenzo Sonego.
