Irani Cup returns after two years, Saurashtra to play Rest of India between October 1-5

The 2022-23 domestic season will see two Irani Cup games and current Ranji champion Madhya Pradesh will get its chance to win the coveted trophy when it plays Rest of India at the end of the season.

Saurashtra, the 2019-2020 Ranji Trophy champion, will take on Rest of India at the MCA Stadium in Rajkot as the Irani Cup makes a return after a two-year pandemic-induced hiatus.

The 2022-23 domestic season will see two Irani Cup games and current Ranji champion Madhya Pradesh will get its chance to win the coveted trophy when it plays Rest of India at the end of the season.

“Saurashtra had won the Ranji Trophy title in 2019-20 season, just before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, so now that the Irani Cup is returning after a hiatus, the Board decided to start the tournament with Saurashtra taking on the Rest of India,” a BCCI insider said.

In a statement on Sunday, the Saurashtra Cricket Association stated, "It is very heartening that domestic season 2022-23 of BCCI is to be played in full swing and Irani Cup is to be played after two long years..."

The MPCA officials also confirmed that they were informed about the decision on Sunday evening.

The association also thanked the BCCI for allotting the match to Rajkot. Irani Cup returns to the fold after two years.

“Today evening, we were informed by the BCCI that the winners of the 2019-20 edition of the Ranji Trophy will play the Irani Cup since it could not be held then due to the pandemic,” MPCA secretary Sanjeev Rao told Sportstar, adding that MP will play its Irani Cup game at the conclusion of the season.

The BCCI officials meanwhile recently did a recce of the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior as Holkar Stadium in Indore is busy preparing for the India vs South Africa T20I on October 3.
