Far away in Ireland, former India leg-spinner M.V. Narasimha Rao was thrilled with England winning the ICC World Cup on Sunday. The reason? ‘Bobjee’ had been the victorious captain Eoin Morgan’s under-17 coach.

“It gives immense pleasure when you see one of those young talent whom you groomed, when he played under-17 for Ireland, to go on to don England colours and win the World Cup,” Bobjee told Sportstar on Monday. “Morgan’s fantastic feat should have a cascading influence on the young talent in Ireland.”

Reflecting on Morgan’s early days, Bobjee, who still coaches young talent in Ireland, reminded that the English captain was an immensely gifted player who spoke with such clarity about his game at such a young age.

Disciplined

“He was a bundle of extraordinary talent, and given the kind of discipline and hard work he used to put in, I am not surprised at his evolution as a world-class cricketer. I vividly remember how he tortured me with throwdowns to him after regular practice sessions with the team. He was passionate to keep improving,” he said.

“The last time I met him was in Hyderabad when he was playing Sunrisers Hyderabad. I was floored with is simplicity despite achieving so much,” said Bobjee.

What was his advice to Morgan? “It was pretty simple — be hungry for big scores. I knew he was something special, given the kind of innovative stroke-play he had then itself.”
