Eoin Morgan made a 71-ball 148, laced with a record 17 sixes, to help England post 397 for five after winning the toss and opting to bat first. It's the fourth-fastest century in World Cups overall. He was named the man of the match for his century.

Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root shared a -run partnership for the second wicket, with the former making 90 and Root out for 88. Bairstow was caught and bowled by Gulbadin Naib, while Root was also dismissed by Naib.

Afghanistan captain Gulbadin Naib was the pick of the bowlers with three for 68, his scalps being Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan. With Hazratullah Zazai sitting out this match, Naib opened the batting with Noor Ali Zadran and made 37 runs off 28 balls.

Hashmatullah Shahidi top-scored for Afghanistan with 100-ball 76, sharing two fifty-plus partnerships with Rahmat Shah and Asghar Afghan.

Jofra Archer was the pick of the English bowlers with figures of three for 52 in 10 overs. His scalps included Noor Ali Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rashid Khan.
