STUMPS DAY 3 - SOUTH AFRICA 118/2, NEEDS 122 RUNS TO WIN

SESSION RECAP: South Africa skipper Dean Elgar led from the front, taking blows and piling on the runs to end the day unbeaten on 46. Shardul Thakur got the first breakthrough for India with the wicket of Markram after a strong 47-run opening stand. Keegan Petersen and Elgar added another crucial 46 runs before Ashwin trapped Petersen in front to revive India's hopes. However, Rassie van der Dussen joined his captain's defiance, denying India another wicket for 12.4 overs that produced just 25 runs. The host heads into the fourth day with an edge over KL Rahul's men with 122 runs needed with eight wickets in hand. Joins us for live action tomorrow. That will be all for today.

SA 118/2 in 40 overs: Good shape from Shami and beats Dussen's poke outside off. Similar delivery again but Dussen leaves this one. Skiddy Shami rushes this one onto Dussen from a length on fourth stump. Short on middle and Dussen pulls it fine for a single. Around the wicket to Elgar and he lets it go at the last moment outside off. Angled in and full on the stump and Elgar defends it with the grit that has kept him at the crease through the session. Stumps!

SA 117/2 in 39 overs: Thakur from over the wicket to Elgar. Strays on the pads and a easy single for Elgar behind square. Close! Dussen leaves one very close to off stump. On the pads again and Dussen tucks it for a single. Elgar wards off a length ball that dips late on off stump.

SA 115/2 in 38 overs: Shami returns to the attack. Another nasty hit for Elgar on the shoulder this time. A vicious bouncer to follow that it up. Too full this time and Elgar tucks it fine with a shuffle across for a single.

SA 114/2 in 37 overs: Thakur comes round the wicket to Elgar and gets one to kick off from a length that gets him on the gloves. Dussen gets an inside edge on one that nips in from outside off and almost chops on. The first ball seems to have taken a toll on Elgar's hand as he gets it iced by the team physio.

SA 111/2 in 36 overs: Ashwin continues. Extra bounce again and hits Elgar high on the bat. Stifled appeal for LBW and turned down. It turned in from off stump but was going over the stumps probably. Elgar drives an over-pitched delivery through extra covers and he will collect three runs. Agarwal seems to have jarred his knee while fielding that one and he is limping off the field.

SA 108/2 in 35 overs: Thakur replaces Bumrah. Play enters the last half hour. Wide outside off first up; Dussen leaves. This one comes in to him and he hops to defend. A couple of singles to end the over. Thakur was examining the patch outside off from the Golf Course End between overs.

SA 103/2 in 33 overs: Bumrah skids one onto Dussen from a length on off stump and he gets his willow down in time to tap it back. Short and going down leg and Dussen pulls it behind square. SA 100/2 in 32 overs: Ashwin to van der Dussen and Pant behind the stumps. Dussen leaves one on leg stump and that rises to get him on the chest. He pokes one to point for a single and SA brings up 100.

SA 99/2 in 31 overs: Bumrah changes his angle to Elgar. Comes over the wicket now. Keeps it on a tight line outside off before getting one on middle that nips in a bit onto his legs. A bouncer and Pant does well to get a hand to it. Nasty one! Bumrah knocks one under Elgar's neck and he is rattled with that one and sinks to his knees for a brief while to gather himself again. The physio is out for the routine concussion check. A bouncer again and that's the over.

SA 99/2 in 30 overs: Ashwin continues. Two singles to start off with. Van der Dussen has a hard time negotiating Ashwin and Pant's chirping behind the stumps doesn't make his life any easier.

SA 97/2 in 29 overs: Bumrah into the attack. Round the wicket to Elgar. Attacks the off stump from the angle first up. A couple of balls in the channel before a bouncer that slides down leg. Fuller on off stump and Elgar pushes it at mid off for three. van der Dussen pulls to fine leg to get off the mark.

SA 47/1 in 10 overs: FOUR! Length on off from Thakur and Markram slashes it to the square boundary. Loud appeal for LBW but Erasmus is not impressed. KL doesn't go up. It nipped in a bit from a fullish length and took Markram's back thigh. Appeal again for LBW next ball and Erasmus shakes his head again. Thakur looked keen but KL doesn't oblige. That was angling down leg. Peach! Comes into Markram from wide outside off and beats his expansive drive. OUT! This time Thakur gets his man. Shaped away from a length on leg stump and Elgar gets a thick edge that goes to slip on the bounce. Errs in line again and flicked to fine for a couple more. Low full-toss and Elgar guides it to gully for a dot.
