IPL betting: Former Indian women's team coach Tushar Arothe arrested

Former India women’s team coach, Tushar Arothe, was arrested in Vadodara late on Monday from his cafe, in connection with alleged betting in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He was later released on bail.

It has been learned that Arothe and his two business partners, Hemang Patel and Nishchal Mitha were nabbed during the IPL fixture between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab.

" We arrested Tushar Arothe along with 18 other persons during a raid at a cafe on the charges of gambling. Their phones and vehicles were seized,” Jaydeepsinh Jadeja, DCP, Crime, Vadodara, told Sportstar .

The police investigations revealed that one of the partners,Hemang is in business of betting and he would accept bets on various mobile apps.

Jadeja, however, confirmed that the police didn’t find any betting app in Arothe’s mobile.

The 52-year-old Arothe coached the Indian women’s team from April 2017 to June 2018, before stepping down from the job after some senior players were unhappy with him.

In his short stint as the coach of the Indian team, he guided the side to the World Cup final in 2017 and also the final of the Asia Cup last year.

Before taking up the India job, Arothe coached the Baroda state team in the Ranji Trophy. In his playing career, Arothe featured in 114 first-class games, and 51 List A fixtures.
