T20 World Cup 2024, Group A Points Table Update after USA vs PAK: United States on top after second win; India ahead of Pakistan

T20 World Cup 2024 Group A Points Table: USA beats Pakistan in super over for its second consecutive win to go top in Group A with four points.

Winning the toss and the way we bowled in the first six overs, we took wickets and kept them quiet. We knew they will take chances after their partnership. We knew we were in the game with 160 to chase, just needed a partnership. Playing in a World Cup, you don’t get a chance to do it every year. We were fully committed every single ball.

“First six overs while batting we didn’t capitalise. Back-to-back wickets always put us on the back foot. As a batter, you need to step up and build partnerships. We were not up to the mark in the first six overs. Our spinners also did not take wickets. So, these things cost us. All credit to USA. They played better than us in all three departments. Little bit of moisture in the pitch. It was also two-paced. As a professional, you need to assess the conditions.” 

USA skipper Monank Patel is named the Player of the Match. He hit a crucial 38-ball 50 before getting dismissed just when USA looked poise for a comfortable win. Still, it was his 68-run partnership with Andries Gous for the second wicket that had put USA on track to chase the 160-run target. 

What a thrilling and famous win for the USA, beating Pakistan in the Super Over. Saurabh Netravalkar held his nerve superbly in the Super Over, successfully defending 18 runs to keep USA unbeaten in the tournament. And after 11 games, we have our first upset of the tournament. 

As many as seven wides in the Super Over eventually cost Pakistan. There was some sloppy bowling, wicketkeeping and an overthrow that allowed USA to put up 18 runs in the one-over eliminator. 

Remember, it was Nitish Kumar’s last-ball boundary in regulation time that helped USA draw level and take the game into the Super Over. So, USA moves to the top of the Group A points table with four points in two games. 

Saurabh Netravalkar will probably have a bowl for the USA. Pakistan still hasn’t decide which batters will come out. 

Looks like it will be Iftikhar Ahmed and Fakhar Zaman after quite a delay. 

Netravalkar to Iftikhar first ball. Angling away outside off, Iftikhar shuffles across and umpire doesn’t call it wide. Dot ball. 

FOUR! Pulled away by Iftikhar to the midwicket boundary. 15 needed from 4 balls. This is wide outside off and it will be called WIDE. Pakistan needs 14 from 4 balls. 

OUT! Drilled down the ground by Iftikhar but an excellent catch by the long-off fielder, who runs in and dives forward. The third umpire is having a look whether that was taken cleanly. Looks like the fingers were underneath the ball and Iftikhar has to go. 

Pakistan needs 14 runs to win from three balls. In comes Shadab Khan. Wide outside off and it’s 13 runs from three balls now. FOUR LEG-BYES! That runs away to the boundary off Shadab’s pads. Nine needed from 2 balls. A couple of runs down the ground for Shadab. 7 needed from 1 ball. Just a single through the off-side and USA has won a famous victory here! 

Amir to Jones first ball. FOUR! Width outside off and cut away behind point by Jones for a boundary. Flicked away to deep midwicket by Jones for a couple more. Excellent yorker by Amir and Jones can only collect a single. Wide ball down leg-side and the batters will take a single too. Nine runs from three balls. Full toss on the pads but Jones can only flick it away for a single. Wide down leg-side again, Rizwan doesn’t collect that cleanly and the batters will scamper through for a single again. Slashed through the off-side by Jones and he does well to come back for a second. Wide outside off, batters run a couple of runs this time as there is an overthrow this time. Extremely sloppy from Pakistan. Flicked off the pads for a single by Jones and USA has 18 on the board. 

We already have the second Super Over of this World Cup, after the Namibia vs Oman game, which went in the former’s favour. 

USA will bat first in the Super Over as it had batted second in the game. Remember, only two wickets for the batting team in the one-over eliminator. 

Mohammad Amir will bowl. Harmeet Singh and Aaron Jones will come out to bat for USA. 

Rauf with the ball. Just a single to start the over. 14 needed from 5 balls. Jones on strike. Dropped at mid-off and the batters take a single. 13 needed from 4 balls. Sliced away to deep point by Nitish for just one more. 12 needed from 3 balls. 

SIX! Full toss and Jones has flicked this for a maximum over deep midwicket. USA needs 6 from 2 now. GAME ON! Just a single down the ground for Jones. 5 needed from 1 now. FOUR! Nitish gets a boundary at long-off and that’s tie!!! TIME FOR A SUPER OVER! 

USA needs 21 from 12 balls. Amir with the ball. Slow and short and Jones lofts this dangerously to long-on for a single. 20 from 11 now. Yorker, loud appeal for lbw as Nitish misses the flick but the umpire doesn’t budge. Pakistan will review. Impact is outside leg and Nitish survives. Yorker and dug out by Jones back to the bowler. 19 to win from 9 balls now. In the blockhole and heaved to long-on by Jones for just a single. Nitish goes for a scoop and misses and that’s a dot ball. 18 needed from 7 balls. In the blockhole again and driven down the ground by Nitish and they’ll run three for that. 15 needed from the last over. 

Here comes Afridi. Good yorker length delivery just outside off and Jones cannot connect. FOUR! Full toss and slashed over the infield on the off-side by Jones and he finds a much-needed boundary. Excellent yorker, Jones just about digs it out and the batters do well to scamper through for a single. Nitish has made his ground at the striker’s end. 

USA needs 23 from 15 balls. Yorker length again outside off and Nitish swings and misses. 23 from 14 balls now. Low full toss and lofted on the off-side by Nitish for a single. Jones shuffles across and scoops this for a single to end the over. 

Naseem with the ball. Jones cuts this to deep point for a single. USA needs 33 runs from 23 balls. One more for Nitish on the leg-side. Naseem goes for the slower bouncer to Jones but it has been called a wide for height. USA now needs 31 from 21 balls. A couple of singles off the next two balls. Another single to end the over. Good over from Naseem. USA needs 28 from 3 overs. 

Shadab comes back for his third over. USA needs 45 runs from 5 overs. Tossed up and driven down the ground by Jones for a single. One more for Nitish at long-on next ball. Slog sweep by Jones and he gets a couple at deep midwicket. SIX! Slog sweep again and Jones has cleared the boundary at deep midwicket and collects half a dozen runs. Single to end the over and USA needs less than 9 an over in the last 4 overs. 

USA needs 49 from 36 balls. OUT! Amir comes back and removes Monank. The USA skipper skips out to slash this on the off-side but gets an edge to Rizwan. 

Nitish Kumar comes in and is beaten first ball by one that moves away a bit from him. Pushed to point by Nitish for a single and he is off the mark. Short and wide and Jones looks to cut it in the air but misses. Guided to deep point by Jones for a couple. Single on the off-side to end the over and Jones will keep strike.

Rauf back for his third over. OUT! Hits the top of Gous’ off-stump and that’s a big breakthrough for Pakistan. 

Aaron Jones is the next man in. Defends this one on the stumps from the crease. Down the leg-side and the batters will come back for a couple. Wide called and that’s three extra runs for USA. A bit of width outside off cut away by Jones but straight to the point fielder. This is cut behind point for another dot ball. Jones looks a bit restless. 

FOUR! Off the inside edge and that runs away to the boundary off Jones’ bat. Lucky runs but USA will take them. Beaten! Misses Jones’ outside edge and that’s the over. 

Andries Gous b Haris Rauf 35 (26b 5x4 1x6)

Afridi comes back. USA needs 66 from 48 balls now at 8.25 rpo. The ball has been changed as Pakistan wasn’t too happy with the condition of the ball. Monank steps out first ball and swings and misses outside off-stump as the ball angles away. 

FOUR! Lofted aerially over cover and that’s a boundary for Monank. SIX! Cracking shot. Good length ball hammered down the ground for a maximum and that’s a 50 for Monank off 34 balls. Three dot balls to end the over but still 10 runs from it. 

Here comes Iftikhar into the attack for some off-spin. Punched to long-off for a single by Gous. Flighted outside off and Monank misses after making away outside leg-stump. FOUR! Punched through cover off the backfoot by Monank and Rauf puts in a good dive at the boundary but that will still be four runs for the USA skipper. That’s also the 50-run partnership off 38 balls. FOUR! Monank slashes this over cover and finds the boundary again on the off-side. Thumped down the ground by Monank and goes to the long-on fielder on the bounce. Just a single. Dot ball to end the over but still 10 from it. 

USA needs 84 runs to win from 60 balls and this should be a very interesting contest from here. USA just needs to continue doing what it has been doing so far and hold its nerve to pull off a stunning upset, the first of this tournament so far. 

Naseem comes back. Good length just outside off and Gous lets it go. FOUR! Pulled away and Gous finds the square-leg boundary with that shot. Exposes his stumps on this occasion and drives straight to the mid-off fielder for a dot ball. Thumped down the ground off the inside edge by Gous for a single. Driven through the off by Monank for one more. Short and called wide for height. Pulled in front by Gous and it falls short of the fielder at long-on and just a single to end the over. 

Shadab will continue. He starts off with a wide down leg-side. SIX! Gous goes down the ground and clears the rope at long-off. Tossed up again on the stumps and Gous flicks this to deep midwicket for a single. Flicked off the backfoot through square-leg by Monank for one more. Single to end the over and USA in a very comfortable position at the half-way mark. 

Rauf again. Driven on the up by Monank for a couple through the cover region. Bouncer and Monank wants to ramp it but misses. Pulled away by Monank to deep square-leg for a single. Driven by Gous for one more. Flicked off the pads by Monank for a single again. FOUR! Driven square and Gous beats point to end the over with a boundary. 

Shadab into the attack. A couple for Monank through the off-side. One more for him through midwicket. Punched off the backfoot to long-on by Gous for another single. 

Haris Rauf with the ball after the PowerPlay. Good pace and bounce and Monank gets an outside edge to point as he hops to defend his stumps. A single for him next ball. Driven away to Gous to deep point for a couple. FOUR! Low full toss outside off and this is driven through cover-point for a boundary. Fifty up for USA in 6.4 overs. 

OUT! Outside edge and it carries to the wicketkeeper and Pakistan has a breakthrough. Taylor has to go and Naseem strikes in his second over. 

Andries Gous comes in next. FOUR! Chance in the slips first ball and the ball runs away to the boundary. To be fair, that fell well short of the slip fielder but the ball should have been stopped at least. Sloppy work in the field by Pakistan today. 

A couple of dot balls in a row as Gous times the ball well but finds the fielders in the circle on the off-side. FOUR! Pulled away with disdain by Gous to the midwicket boundary and this is still a good start for the USA. 

Amir replaces Afridi. FOUR! Monank has pulled this away expertly to the square-leg boundary. Misfield at point and Monank will sneak through a single. A couple of dot balls to follow as Taylor is unable to put the ball away. Taylor backs away outside leg and flicks one through the on-side for a couple. A single to end the over off an inside edge and Taylor will keep strike. 

Naseem Shah into the attack, replacing Amir. Inside edge to short fine off the first ball and Taylor takes a single. Driven down the ground crisply by Monank but Naseem gets a hand to it and stops it from running away to the boundary. Tucked off on leg-side for a single by Monank. Pushed to cover by Taylor for a quick one. Short, pulled awkwardly by Monank and just over midwicket for a single to end the over. 

Afridi to continue. Taylor defends this back to the bowler as the ball holds into the pitch a bit. Away movement and Taylor swings and misses outside off. Beautifully driven to mid-off and a misfield allows Taylor to steal a single. Going down leg-side and called wide. FOUR! Thick outside edge as Monank looks to flick this on leg-side and the ball flies through the slip cordon for another boundary. FOUR! Full toss outside off and this is driven away by Monank for back-to-back boundaries. This one keeps low and hits Monank in front and Afridi for a loud lbw appeal. The umpire is not convinced and Pakistan goes upstairs.

Mohammad Amir from the other end. Starts off with a wide ball down leg-side. This is sprayed wide outside off and another extra run for USA. Outside off again, and Taylor shoulder arms. Driven and excellent fielding at point by Shadab to keep it down to a single. Beaten! Angling away outside off and Monank misses trying to punch this through cover off the backfoot. Going down leg-side again and third wide of the over from Amir. Whipped off the pads by Monank but to the midwicket fielder. FOUR! Monank steps out now and slashes this behind poiint for a boundary. Defended back to the bowler off the inside half of the bat to end the over. 

Steven Taylor and Monank Patel will begin the chase for USA. Shaheen Afridi with the new ball. Full and driven to point by Taylor. First runs on the board for USA with a wide outside off. FOUR! Full toss and that’s driven away through cover by Taylor for a boundary. Swinging in and driven to cover-point by Taylor for a single. Full toss again but Monank can only flick it hurriedly to mid-on. Going down leg-side, appeal from Pakistan for caught behind but this seems to have brushed Monank’s pads after he missed the flick. Pakistan doesn’t review. 

Ali Khan to bowl the last over. Shaheen missed the first delivery and ran two but the umpire deemed the boss dead after the keeper collected the ball and threw it to the bowler, A couple of singles and a wide. Ali to Shaheen, SIX! Down the ground, massive six for Shaheen. A single to end the over as Pakistan ends up with 159/7 in 20 overs.

Saurabh Netravalkar to bowl the 19th over of this innings. Saurabh to Iftikhar, OUT! Wickets keep tumbling for Pakistan. Itfikhar goes down on knee and tries to scoop the yorker over long-on but an inswinging ball traps him for LBW.
