It was double delight for Mohammedan Sporting as it cruised to a 2-0 past Peerless SC and stormed to the top of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) points table on Monday. Kareem Omolaja found the net at the hour mark, while Vanlalbiaa Chhangte fetched the insurance goal nine minutes later to power Sporting to a comfortable win.
Following a barren first half, Peerless SC, which was without star striker Ansumana Kromah owing to suspension, gained early momentum launching a series of quick counter attacks after the change of ends. Its efforts bore fruit in the 54th minute when it was awarded a penalty, but Jiten Murmu failed to find the target and shot well over the crossbar. Sporting made most of the reprieve and found two quick goals to seal the issue in its favour.
The result opened up the league once again as Mohammedan Sporting rose to the top of the standings with 19 points from 10 matches. Peerless remained on 17 points from nine matches and dropped to the second position. While Sporting has only one match left, the contest for the crown narrows down to Peerless and 39-time champion East Bengal (also on 17 points but placed third with a inferior goal difference), who each have two matches left.
