Marcos Espada Martin's first-half penalty earned East Bengal a 1-0 win against Rainbow AC in a Calcutta Football League match at its home ground on Friday. Spanish forward Marcos netted a 35th minute penalty to secure the full quota of points for East Bengal.

The win, which came after the 2-2 draw against Bhowanipur Club, helped East Bengal move up to the second spot with 17 points from nine matches. East Bengal was tied on points with the current leader Peerless SC, which remained on top on account of a better goal difference. Peerless has also played a match less to remain the favourite in the race for the title.

With two matches left to play, East Bengal has to win both the matches while wishing that Peerless drops enough points in its next three outings to give itself a chance of regaining the title.
