Manchester City demolishes Liverpool with a dominant 4-1 victory in the Premier League. Jack Grealish with a goal and an assist, is named the Player of the Match as Man City continues its pursuit to defend the title.

A calm and composed City continues to progress up the pitch in what is a typical Guardiola-style of play -- a slow-build. Mahrez to Stones to De Bruyne as seven red shirts anticipate the next step, sequestered in their own half.

Robertson and Salah combine to set up Gakpo in the box but Stones comes to the rescue to intercept and head the ball away.

City is now reassuring its dominance in the contest with triangular passes, maintaining possession and marching up the pitch with combination play.

Liverpool tries a counter attack with Robertson taking the ball in the City box and he looks for Salah to deliver a cross and Gakpo goes down after a touch from Ake. He appeals for a penalty but the referee, after a VAR check, rules play on.

Kevin De Bruyne’s goal after 53 seconds is the earliest Liverpool have conceded in the second half of a Premier League game since Sylvain Distin netted after just 40 seconds for Everton in January 2011.

Manchester City has a string of blue shirts in the Liverpool box and the counter attack sees Alvarez shoot, which is saved as the ball falls for Gundogan who scores the third goal for Guardiola’s side today.

Man City goes for an attack with Gundogan combining with Grealish. Gundogan passes to Grealish on his left and gets the ball back to shoot on target. Again, Alisson makes a good routine save.

Salah delivers a long ball for Gakpo in the final third. The Dutchman keeps the ball stuck to his feet, remaining unmoved by the defenders and he shoots which is saved by Alisson. But the linesman raises the falg eventually as the Reds had a player in the box before the ball was delivered.

City attacks on the counter with Alvarez delivering a wonderful cross for Mahrez on the other flank. Mahrez makes a run along the right and crosses for De Bruyne who taps it in within 53 second of restart. What a game this is turning out to be!

City attacks again with Mahrez carrying the ball into the final third, crossing for Gundogan whose shot is blocked at the last moment by Fabinho. However, the linesman raises the flag as De Bruyne was off-side during teh build-up.

Robertson gets the ball in the midfield, he makes a run and tries to set up Gakpo. However, City gets the ball back eventually.

Liverpool has five men at the back. Grealish crosses the ball from the left for Dias and Van Dijk intercepts to head the ball away. The set-up should have worked well had there been Haaland on the field but the Nowegian can only watch from the stands, being ruled out with an injury.

Alexander-Arnold tries to get to the ball ahead of Grealish and ends up pushing the former Aston Villa player down. City gets the free-kick but scuffle breaks out between Akanji and Henderson. The referee intervenes to calm things down for a corner kick on the follow-up of the free-kick.

Time to attack for Liverpool! Salah gets a brilliant ball from Jota and the Egyptian is away along the right flank. He delivers a loss cross for Jota in the centre, but Stoens intercepts to clear the ball away.

Man City starts an attack from the midfield, with De Bruyne and Grealish combining very well. The ball moves ot Gundogan and just then the linesman raises the flag for off-side.

Rodri tries to get the ball off Gakpo and the referee gives a foul. The Reds surround the referee demanding a harsher punishment with the player already on a yellow card. But the referee lets him play after a verbal warning.

De Bruyne gets the ball to Mahrez who marches up the pitch to p]ass it to Gundogan. Gundogan gets the ball to Grealish whose cross os steered into thenet by Alvarez for a crucial equaliser.

Man City, which had three men at the back initially, has returned to four after suffering a quick goal on the counter. Meanwhile, Mahrez tries to march up the pitch and gets a corner kick. It is headed away by Liverpool and Salah is running alone up the pitch. Grealish makes a crucial interceptoion to stop the goalscorer from scoring another in this game.

Liverpool attacks on the counter with Jota carrying the ball into the box. He turns and passes it to Salah who was running into the box and the Egyptian shoots on target to rattle the net and Liverpool has the early lead.

Grealish gets the ball from Aje in the left. He cuts to his right, tries to beat two Liverpool players and gets caught by a Fabinho arm in what ends with a City free-kick.

Salah pressurizes Rodri and Liverpool decide to drag City to its half. The ball moves to Alisson who kicks the ball out of danger.

Salah gets the ball along the right flank after a good runby Gakpo to carry the ball along the opposite flank. The Efgyptian, however, loses control of the ball to concede a City goal-kick.

It’s nothing new for a game between Manchester City and Liverpool to have significant implications on the Premier League title race.

On Saturday, however, the meeting between English football’s two most dominant teams in recent years takes on a different complexion.

For current champion City, anything other than a win at Etihad Stadium would give Premier League leader Arsenal the chance to extend its lead and move ever closer to its first league title in 19 years. Arsenal leads City by eight points heading into the final stretch of the season, having played one game more.

For Liverpool, any hopes of challenging at the top disappeared long ago in a troubled campaign, blighted by injuries and inconsistent form. But the team coached by Jurgen Klopp can still have a major say on the title race in its games against City this weekend and Arsenal next month.

The priority for the Merseyside club, however, is to secure a top-four finish and, with it, qualification for next season’s Champions League. That’s why the stakes are so high on Saturday. A win is vital to both sides — even if they are not going head-to-head for the title.

The two teams have shared the last five league titles between them, with City winning four to Liverpool’s one.

While Man City has undoubtedly had the better of the rivalry, in two of those title victories it beat Liverpool by only one point. The most recent of those was last season, which is why Liverpool’s decline has come as such a surprise.

A team that competed for an unprecedented quadruple of trophies last year is battling to salvage what’s left of this season, with Champions League qualification the best it can hope for.

It’s a different story for City, which can still win the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup. But time is running out to close the gap on Arsenal.

Victory over Liverpool would certainly be a boost — especially with a game in hand on Arsenal and a home match against the leaders to come next month.

City is showing signs that it is set for a powerful finish to the season, losing only once in its last 14 games in all competitions. It has won its last six, but is about to embark on a critical period of games.

After Liverpool, City faces Bayern Munich over two legs in the Champions League quarterfinals, Sheffield United in the FA Cup semifinals and Arsenal in the league — all before the end of April.

In among that sequence are games against Southampton and Leicester in the league.
