Liverpool put nine unanswered goals past a hapless AFC Bournemouth to secure its first win of the 2022-23 Premier League season at Anfield on Saturday. This was Liverpool’s biggest win in the English top flight, matching the score line from its 1989 game against Crystal Palace.
The Jurgen Klopp-managed side began the rout in the second minute through a Luis Diaz header. Harvey Elliot doubled the lead with a long-range effort. By the half-time break, Liverpool was leading by 5-0, with goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Roberto Firmino and Virgil van Dijk.
Bournemouth’s misery was compounded soon after the restart when its defender Chris Mepham bundled in an Alexander-Arnold cross for an own goal.
Firmino was at the heart of five of the nine goals scored by the Reds. The Brazilian provided three assists and scored two goals himself to ensure Bournemouth’s third defeat on a trot.
Diaz wrapped up the game when he headed in a corner from Konstantanios Tsimikas to equal his side’s top-flight record.
