Rising Student Club reached the Hero Indian Women’s League final by defeating KRYHPSA 4-3 on penalties at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Thursday.

KRYHPSA made the more impactful start to the contest that turned out to be full of failed scoring attempts. Bala Devi almost scored in the first minute — her volley from inside the box went inches past the goal — before Rising Student Club goalkeeper Tikina Samal made a series of saves to keep her side in the contest.

Although both teams created numerous goal-scoring opportunities, neither proved to be clinical in front of goal.

A big opportunity to score was missed when KRYHPSA’s Ratanbala Devi rounded the opposing custodian to score. Although her shot was saved, she tried to flick home the rebound. The opposition defence committed bodies into the box and pushed away the danger.

Near misses

In the 73rd minute, Rising Student Club rattled the woodwork via a shot from inside the box. Just before full time, KRYHPSA had one last chance to seal the contest when Bala Devi headed off a corner-kick, but it went over the bar. Later, in the 110th minute (during extra-time), her shot struck the woodwork but didn’t go in.

The miss proved to be costly as Rising Student Club had the better of the penalty shootout.
