Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has called for a fresh approach to Formula One's weekend schedule in bad weather after Friday practice had to be abandoned at the Chinese Grand Prix.

Poor visibility meant the medical helicopter could not land at the designated hospital in Shanghai, prompting officials to call off the sessions on safety grounds.

Teams are thought to have discussed moving the race to Saturday, with heavy rain forecast for the build-up to lights out on Sunday.

The logistical headache of making that alteration is thought to have put paid to any such plans, but three-time world champion Hamilton sees this as an opportunity for change.

"So sorry for all u either watching on TV or here at the track," he tweeted. "We must find a solution to deal with weather issue.

"Sat program: 3 practice sessions, qualifying Sunday morning and then race. Who's down for the switch up?

"Seriously tho, this could actually be a blessing in disguise. A chance for new bosses to be proactive and creative #switchitupF1 #bestfans."
