Tennis

Roger Federer >sealed his 18th career Grand Slam as he defeated Rafael Nadal 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the final of the Australian Open on Sunday.

On Saturday, Serena Williams defeated her sister, Venus, in an all-Williams final 6-4, 6-4, to lift her 23rd Grand Slam, surpassing Stefi Graff's 22, in the final of the Australian Open. She is one short of equalling Margaret Court's 24 Grand Slams.

Sania Mirza missed out on her seventh Grand Slam opportunity, when she along with Croatia's Ivan Dodig lost to Abigail Spears and Juan Sebastian Cabal in the mixed doubles final.

Badminton

Olympic silver medallist >P.V. Sindhu won her first Syed Modi International Grand Prix Gold title as she brushed aside Indonesia's Gregoria Mariska in the final, while Sameer Verma defeated compatriot B. Sai Praneeth 21-19, 21-16 in the men’s singles.

Football

A disastrous week for Liverpool ended with the side being knocked out of both EFL Cup and FA Cup, by Southampton and Wolves respectively. Southampton will now face Manchester United, who overcame Hull City, in the final of the EFL Cup.

All the other big guns sealed their progress in the FA cup with Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City all registering comprehensive wins.

Barcelona and Atletico Madrid will face each other in the Copa del Rey semifinal, but Real Madrid will miss out as Zidane’s men were knocked out by Celta Vigo.

But both – Barcelona and Atletico Madrid – failed to translate their cup form in La Liga as they played out draws against Real Betis and Alaves respectively.

Real Madrid >came back strong on Sunday night , after getting knocked of the Copa del Rey, as it defeated Real Sociedad 3-0 in La Liga encounter.

Juventus registered a win over arch-rivals AC Milan in Coppa Italia.

Bayern Munich defeated Werder Bremen 2-1 to keep its lead at the top of the table, RB Leipzig defeated Hoffenheim 2-1.

In I-League, Mohun Bagan's tie against DSK Shivajians ended goalless. On Sunday, East Bengal thrashed Minerva Punjab 5-0 to top the standings after five games on goal difference. Bengaluru F.C. was handed its second successive defeat when it was defeated by Churchill Brothers. Chennai City registered its first win the league when it defeated Aizawl FC.

Cricket

In the three-match T20I series, England started with a victory over India at Kanpur. However, India came back strong, riding on the performances of K. L. Rahul, Ashish Nehra and Jasprit Bumrah >to win the second T20I at Nagpur on Sunday. With that, the series is tied 1-1 as the teams head towards Bangalore for the decider, to be played on Wednesday.

In South Africa, Sri Lanka won the T20I series against the host. However, riding on Imran Tahir and Wayne Parnell's performances, South Africa, fought back to register a comprehensive win in the first ODI.
