Bahamian sprinter Shaunae Miller dove over the finish line to edge United States track legend Allyson Felix in the 400-meter final. Miller's 49.44 was just enough to beat Felix's 49.51. Jamaica's Shericka Jackson earned a bronze medal with a time of 49.85.

Simone Biles, touted to make a clean sweep in gymnastics, slipped in the balance beam routine to finish third. Biles struggled with a landing on a front tucked salto and had to fight hard to stay on the balance beam, costing her a fourth gold medal from the Olympic Games but earning her a bronze.

P. V. Sindhu and K. Srikanth kept India's medal hopes alive in badminton after they won their respective pre-quarterfinal ties.

Day 12 of the Games has 25 gold medal events.
