British judoka Ashley McKenzie lost by a solitary yuko point to Yeldov Smetov of Kazakhstan.

Ashley McKenzie was in tears after his exit in the judo -60kg category on Saturday but the Brit can at least return home from the Olympics boasting a table tennis victory over Andy Murray.

Commonwealth champion McKenzie was eyeing a medal in Rio, but lost by a solitary yuko point to Yeldov Smetov of Kazakhstan on day one of the Rio Games.

An emotional McKenzie said in an interview with BBC Sport after his loss to the world number four: "I think there's tears of hard work over four years."

The 27-year-old Londoner was left to reflect on what might have been after his loss at the round of 16, but it was confirmed by a member of the Team GB media staff that McKenzie got the better of Wimbledon champion Murray this week.

McKenzie quipped to three-time grand slam champion "You're not at Wimbledon now mate!" after getting one over on the Team GB flag bearer.
