Wimbledon, Day 5: Nadal, Djokovic, Halep progress; Cilic, Muguruza crash out

Most of the top seeds in the men's and women's singles draw progressed to round three on another enthralling day's action at Wimbledon.

Smooth sailing for Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro, but Martin Cilic has crashed out of Wimbledon at the second round. In women's singles, Angelique Kerber, Elise Mertens and No. 1 seed Simona Halep were among those who progressed.

Defending champion Garbine Muguruza has been knocked out in the second round by Alison Van Uytvanck, who wins 5-7 6-2 6-1 in the biggest shock of day five.

12.38am: Fabio Fognini has beaten Simone Bolelli 6-3 6-4 6-1 to progress to the third round.

12.25am: Garbine Muguruza has taken the first set 7-5 against Alison Van Uytvanck, who is serving at the start of the second set.

12.20am: Fabio Fognini, who is up two sets to love against Simone Bolelli, is leading the third set 2-0. Elsewhere, Kyle Edmund has beaten Bradley Klahn 6-4 7-6 (0) 6-2 to progress to the third round.

12.00am: Alexander Zverev is on serve at 2-3 in the second set, having won the first 6-4, against Taylor Fritz.

11.45pm: Anett Kontaveit beats Jennifer Brady 6-2 7-6 (4) to progress to the third round.

11.17pm: Kei Nishikori the latest to progress to the third round with a 2-6 6-3 7-6 (7) 7-5 victory over Bernard Tomic.

11.15pm: Rohan Bopanna and his partner Roger Vasselin have emerged victorious against Alex De Minaur and John Millman, who go down 2-6 2-6 4-6.

11.10pm: Jelena Ostapenko has won the first set 6-1 against Kirsten Flipkens.

11.01pm: Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and his partner Austin Krajicek have lost to to Dutch pair of S. Arends and M. Middelkop 7-6 (5) 7-6 (3) 7-6 (2).

11.00pm: Juan Martin Del Potro has secured a straight-sets victory (6-4 6-1 6-2) over Spaniard Feliciano Lopez to move into the third round.

10.52 pm: The Indian flag flies high at SW19. N. Sriram Balaji and Vishu Vardhan are off to a good start in their Grand Slam debut. They get the better of Marcus Daniell and Wesley Koolhof 7-6(5), 6-4, 7-6(4).

10.44 pm: Rohan Bopanna, partnering Edouard Roger-Vasselin leads against A. De Minaur/J. Millman 6-2, 6-2.

10.36 pm: Frenchman Benoit Paire is back to winning ways. After losing the first set 6-0, Paire has bounced back to trounce Denis Shapovalov 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(3).

10.30 pm: Japan's Kei Nishikori is back in the lead against Bernard Tomic 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(7).

10.20 pm: Marcos Baghdatis loses a marathon to Karen Khachanov. The Cypriot tennis player lost 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(4), 7-5.

10.11 pm: Another Indian on court. This time it is Rohan Bopanna, partnering Edouard Roger-Vasselin. The pair is in the lead against A. De Minaur/J. Millman 6-2.

10.04 pm: Juan Martin del Potro is getting into the groove quickly. He has won the first set against Feliciano Lopez 6-4.

10.00 pm: The Indians are on a roll. N. Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan lead M. Daniell/W. Koolhof 7-6(5), 6-4.

9.45 pm: Dominica Cibulkova advances in the SW19. She beats Johanna Konta 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. ( Report )

9.30 pm: Belinda Bencic beats Alison Riske 1-6, 7-6(10), 6-2 while A. Rosolska/A. Spears get the better of E. Hrdinova/G. Olmos 6-1 6-4.

9.15 pm: N.S Balaji/V. Vardhan lead M. Daniell/W. Koolhof 7-6(5). J. Vesely leads D. Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4. benoit Paire has bounced back, he wins the second set 6-2. S. Arends/M. Middelkoop lead A. Krajicek/J. Nedunchezhiyan 7-6(5), 7-6(3).

9.05 pm: It was always just a matter of time for World No. 1 Simona Halep. She beats Saisai Zheng 7-5, 6-0 in just little more than an hour. ( Report )

8.50 pm: Frenchman Benoit Paire looks all at sea. He goes down in the first set without a fight 6-0 against 19-year-old Denis Shapovalov.

8.39 pm: The world No 1,  Simona Halep , has sealed the first set 7-5.

8.30 pm: Halep is 5-all against Saisai Zheng while in the men's event, Khachanov leads Baghdatis 6-3, 6-4 .

8.12 pm: Game and set! Former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic advances into the third round with a straight set win over Horacio Zeballos. He wins 6-1, 6-2, 6-3. ( Report )

8.10 pm: The ever-entertaining Nick Kyrgios surges on. He beats Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in the second round. How easy was that?

8.05 pm: Business as usual for World No.1 Rafael Nadal. He wins 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 over Mikhail Kukushkin. How easy is that for the top gun. ( Report )

8.00 pm: 14th seed Daria Kasatkina gets the better of Yulia Putintseva in the second round 6-2, 6-3.

7.50 pm: Elise Mertens advances. She beats Sachia Vickery 6-1, 6-3 while Carla Suarez Navarro gets the better of Spain's Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4, 6-1.

7.45 pm: Simona Halep is warming up on Court No. 1 and she will meet Saisai Zheng. And also Indian and Tamil Nadu player Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan is out. He, partnering with Austin Krajicek, will play Sander Arends and Matew Middelkoop.

7.44 pm: Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios enjoy two set leads in their matches. It is just a matter of time for them to enter the third round.

7.33 pm: No.14 seed Daria Kasatkina is primed for a deep run at SW19 and leads Putintseva 6-2 on Court 12.

7.31 pm: Guido Pella trumps Marin Cilic in five sets as the No. 3 crashes out. What an upset! Pella prevailed 7-5 in the fifth set. He loses 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(3), 7-5. ( Report )

7.22 pm: A. De Minaur moves ahead at SW19. He beats P. Herbert 6-2, 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-3 in the second round.

7.10 pm: Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic is cruising on No 2 Court, having grabbed the first set 6-1!

7.09 pm: And Nadal clinches the second set to make it 6-4, 6-3 against Kukushkin!

7.00 pm: An Indian win at the SW19. Divij Sharan and Artem Sitak are into the third round beating Radu Albot and Malek Jaziri 7-6(4), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-2. ( Report )

6.56 pm: Nick Kyrgios is on song!  He leads Haase 6-3.

6.55 pm: We have another results update. K. Siniakova beats O. Jabeur 5-7, 6-4, 9-7. Also, A. Qureshi and J. Rojer defeats D. Ferrer/M. Lopez 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4. S. Tsitsipas gets the better of J. Donaldson 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3. J. Cabal/R. Farah storm into the second round P. Carreno Busta/G. Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 7-6(10), 2-6, 6-1.

6.35 pm: Frances Tiafoe is into the third round. He gets the better of Julien Benneteau 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

6.33 pm: Business as usual for Rafael Nadal. He wins the first set 6-4 against Mikhail Kukushkin.

6.30 pm: We have Nick Kyrgios warming up in the Court No. 3. He will be facing R. Haase. Given Kyrgios' nature, it should be entertaining!

6.25 pm: We have some updates here! Gilles Simon prevails. He storms into the third round after beating M. Berrettini 6-3, 7-6(4), 6-2 while P. Kohlschreiber gets the better of G. Muller 7-6(6), 7-6(4), 7-6(3). South Africa's Kevin Anderson is also into the third round beating A. Seppi 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4.

6.05 pm: Former World No.1 Angelique Kerber bounces back after losing first set to beat USA's Claire Liu 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round.

5.54 pm: Meanwhile, Stan Wawrinka, who is two sets down and 6-5 up in the third, is making his way to the courts.

 

5.47 pm: The match from last evening, Marin Cilic vs G. Pella has resumed on Court No. 1.

5.40 pm: On the centre court, Rafael Nadal has walked out and is warming up. He will play Mikhail Kukushkin.

5.35 pm: P. Kohlschreiber leads G. Muller 7-6(6), 7-6(4).

5.30 pm: Japan's Naomi Osaka beats Katie Boulter 6-3, 6-4 to storm into the third round.

5.27 pm: And, by the way, Barbora Strycova books a third round meeting with No.13 seed Julia Goerges.

5.26 pm: Angelique Kerber, the two-time Grand Slam winner, bounces back. She is on level terms in the match at 1-1 by winning the second set 6-2 over C. Liu.

5.25 pm: Frances Tiafoe bounces back. He takes the second set 6-3 against Julien Benneteau.

5.17 pm: Barbora Strycova has beat Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the Round-of-32.

5.15 pm: Canada's Eugenie Bouchard is staging a comeback. She is 5-2 up in the second set.

5.10 pm: India's Divij Sharan and A. Sitak are in the lead against R. Albot/M. Jaziri. They have pocketed the first set 7-6(4).

5.07 pm: In doubles, on Court 5, B. Mattek-Sands/L. Safarova lead L. Kichenok/A. Kudryavtseva 7-6(6).

4.57 pm: Julien Benneteau has won the first set 6-4 against Frances Tiafoe. Also, O. Jabeur leads K. Siniakova 7-5.

4.55 pm: Ashleigh Barty has won the first set 6-4 over Eugenie Bouchard while Daria Garilova leads by one set after winning the first set 6-4 against Samantha Stosur.

4.48 pm: Alex de Minaur has taken the first set 6-2 Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

4.46 pm: Are we heading in for an upset? Claire Liu has won the first set against former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber 6-3. Liu is the junior Wimbledon champion from 2017.

4.45 pm: Gilles Simon has won the first set 6-3 against Matteo Berrettini.

4.38 pm: On Court 8, Barbora Strycova has won the first set 6-1 against Lesia Tsurenko.

4.20 pm:From an Indian angle, we have Divij Sharan and Artem Sitak up against Malek Jaziri and Radu Albot while Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Austin Krajicek are playing Sander Arends and Matwe Middelkoop. The Indian doubles duo of N. Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan will meet Marcus Daniell and Wesley Koolhof, later in the evening. We also have Rohan Bopanna and partner Edouard Roger-Vasselin playing John Millman and Alex de Minaur.

4.15 pm: On Court 17, Gilles Simon and Matteo Berrettini are locking horns.

4.10 pm: On Court 3, we have Eugenie Bouchard playing Ashleigh Barty while on Court 12 we have former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber is up against Claire Liu.
