Former World Youth bronze medal winner P. L. Prasad outwitted ex-World youth champion Sachin Siwach in an eventful and rousing semifinal to advance to 52kg title clash on the penultimate day of the National boxing championships at the Army Sports Institute here on Thursday.

In the much-anticipated clash between two talented boxers representing rival organisations Services and Railways, Prasad displayed his quick attacks while Siwach replied with his long-range blows.

As the bout progressed, the strongly-built Prasad raised the intensity by almost crouching and delivering some lusty upper cuts on his distinctly taller opponent. When Prasad was warned for bending too much, an angry Services coach threw a water bottle dangerously high. Later, he was debarred from seconding.

Prasad dominated the third round and the contest went out of Siwach’s hand when he was warned for pulling his rival.

Railways protested on the ground that the final round of the bout was extended beyond the time limit of three minutes. However, the supervisors concerned rejected the complaint after going through a review process.

Sanjeet pips Naman

In another fascinating 91kg contest between two equally competent boxers, India Open champion Sanjeet of Services pipped 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medallist Naman Tanwar of Railways 3-2 to reach the final.

Sanjeet maintained his composure and executed some well-directed punches, while Tanwar missed more than he landed due to the overdose of aggression.

The finals on Friday will feature five more tussles involving Services and Railways boxers.

On a day that witnessed some debatable decisions, young Railways boxer Dinesh Dagar got a 4-1 verdict in his favour against Asian championships and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Mandeep Jangra of Haryana in a 60kg bout. Jangra, who landed some clear punches against Dagar's raw aggression, was heart-broken to get the result.
