It has been a grand ride for the Indian Premier League for the last 12 years and it is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, if the Twitter trends are anything to go by. The social media chatter touched a new peak of 27 million tweets this year. An evening staple at most houses for the last 50 days, the fan brigade was 44 per cent more active on Twitter than last year, according to the data shared by Twitter India.
The IPL fans were at their expressive best on May 12, the day of the IPL final between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. CSK's matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore (April 21) and Delhi Capitals (May 10 - Qualifier 2) came second and third in terms of being the most widely tweeted games.
Chennai Super Kings, despite losing the final to Mumbai Indians on Sunday, continues to be the unchallenged Kings of Twitter with the team enjoying the maximum popularity on social media throughout the tournament.
CSK gave its pride of place only during the final this year, with Mumbai Indians (@Mipaltan) enjoying 63 per cent of the total mentions as against @chennaiIPL's 37 per cent.
M.S. Dhoni, fondly referred to as #Thala by CSK fans, was the most Tweeted about player (@msdhoni) during the IPL, followed by Virat Kohli ( @imVkohli ), Rohit Sharma ( @ImRo45 ), Harbhajan Singh ( @harbhajan_singh ) and Andre Russell ( @Russell12A ).
There were a lot more video snippets consumed generously by the tweeple. They were well aided by the social media team of @IPL which tweeted 130 per cent more videos compared to last year.
The off-field moments, the camaraderie between the players, the star kids, especially Dhoni's daughter Ziva, gave twitter users many heartwarming moments that was eagerly lapped up and shared by innumerable users, helping #IPL2019 fly higher this year.
