SA vs BAN Highlights, T20 World Cup 2024: South Africa beats Bangladesh by four runs in low-scoring thriller

Another nervy win for South Africa, but it has now won three games in a row and has almost confirmed its passage to the Super Eights. It was another hard-fought win after a tense run-chase against the Netherlands in the previous match. Defending 114 runs was also going to be tough, but the bowlers were equal to the task. With 11 runs needed off the last over and left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj bowling, Bangladesh would have fancied its chances, especially with Mahmudullah still at the crease. But despite Maharaj offering three full toss in the final over, Bangladesh was unable to get over the line. 

Bangladesh needs 11 runs to win from 6 balls. Maharaj will bowl the final over. Starts off with a wide down leg-side. 10 needed from 6 balls. A single at square-leg for Mahmudullah. Jaker thumps this down the ground and he gets a couple of runs. 7 needed from 4 balls. OUT! Jaker steps out and finds the fielder at wide long-on. Huge wicket. BAN now needs 7 from 3 balls. Rishad Hossain comes in. Swing and a miss, stifled appeal for lbw and not given. The batters steal a leg-bye but South Africa reviews this. Impact is outside off-stump and the batter survives.

Rabada with the ball. Stifled lbw appeal and given out by the umpire. Hridoy goes upstairs immediately. That’s hitting the top of leg-stump and umpire’s call will see the back of Hridoy. 

Jaker Ali is the new batter. Three dot balls in a row as Jaker is unable to get Mahmudullah back on strike. He shuffles across and smashes this to mid-off for a quick single. Another single off the inside half of the bat to end the over. 18 needed from 12 balls.

Baartman bowls his third over. OUT! Mahmudullah is given out lbw as he shuffles across his stumps and misses a flick down leg-side. Bangladesh will review this. Missing leg-stump and Mahmudullah survives. Yorker length and Mamudullah digs it out to long-on for a single. Bangladesh needs 25 from 21 balls. FOUR! In the slot outside off and Hridoy drives this through cover for a boundary. Flicked through square-leg by Hridoy for a single. Dot ball to end the over. 20 needed from 18 balls. 

Nortje comes back. Three singles and wide down leg-side from the first five balls. Bangladesh needs 27 from 25 balls. A dot ball to end the over. 

FOUR! Jansen goes too full and straight and Hridoy drives it down the ground, past the bowler. Clipped off the pads by Hridoy for one more. 

Maharaj returns. SIX! After three dot balls in a row, Hridoy clears the midwicket boundary with a slog sweep. 

Rabada comes back. Holds into the pitch a bit and Mahmuddullah also chips it into the hands of the mid-off fielder. A couple of singles for Bangladesh. Rabada goes short and Mahmudullah stays back and tucks it on leg-side for one more. 

Nortje bowls his third. He starts off with a no-ball. The free-hit is a slower delivery and Hridoy thumps it down the ground for a single. Three dot balls in a row as Mahmudullah is unable to find the gaps on leg-side. FOUR! Short and fast, and Mahmudullah hangs back and guides the ball just over the slip fielder and finds the boundary. He keeps strike with a single off the last ball. 

Baartman comes back. Hridoy swings across the line for a single at deep square-leg. FOUR! Mahmuddulah steps out and gets an outside edge past the wicketkeeper and finds the boundary. Seven runs from the over. 

Nortje for his second over. A single after three dot balls. OUT! Another wicket. This time Shanto tries to pull and gets a top edge. An easy catch for the fielder inside the circle at midwicket. Mahmudullah in at number six. Nortje welcomes him with a bouncer. 

Maharaj continues. Hridoy smacks a SIX over long off. Brilliant shot early in his innings. Nine runs from the over. 

Anrich Nortje into the attack. OUT! Shakib is gone. He tries to take on the bouncer, ends up top edging it towards midwicket inside circle. Towhid Hridoy at number five. Five runs and a wicket in that over. 

Keshav Maharaj into the attack and takes the wicket on the first ball! Litton Das drives straight to cover. An easy catch for Miller. Bangladesh loses its second wicket. 

Shakib Al Hasan in at number four. Three singles and a wide so far in first five balls. Shanto reverses and takes a double on the last ball. 

Rabada is back. Three runs from the first three balls. Shanto and Liton dealing in singles. Inside edge just past the stumps. Liton survives. Five runs from the over. 

Jansen continues. Short ball and Liton pulls it towards square leg for four! Bouncer to finish the over. Five runs from the over. 

Baartman into the attack and he’s welcomed with a SIX by Shanto. He came down the track and launched the ball straight over the bowler’s head. Baartman comes back brilliantly after that. Four dot balls. Just that six from the over. 

Jansen continues. Short ball and Shanto pulls. Ball doesn’t reach the boundary but the batters run a triple. Body line attack by Jansen. Just four runs from the over. 

Kagiso Rabada. Full ball outside off and Tanzid drives past extra cover for four! Full again, Tanzid once again slashes and finds the boundary past point. Not much movement in the air. OUT! Tanzid once again goes for a drive and the ball gets a faint edge to keeper. South Africa strikes early. 

Marco Jansen with the new ball. Tanzid Hasan on strike. He is happy to let the first two balls go. First runs on the board as Hasan flicks the ball towards deep fine leg for a single. Jansen getting extra bounce off the surface. Just one runs from the over. 

Mustafizur to bowl the final over. He goes across Maharaj and outside off and the batter reaches out but misses. Dot ball to start with. Angled across again, and Maharaj swings across the line and misses. Dot ball again. Shorter, angling away again, and Maharaj swings on leg-side and misses again. Three dots in three balls. Four dots in a row as Maharaj swings and misses again in an identical fashion. Maharaj shuffles across his stumps this time and this is slightly too wide outside off-stump; called wide. Tasking will bowl his last over. Klaasen hammers this straight to the point fielder to start the over with a dot-ball. Slower one now and turned away on leg-side by Klaasen for two more. OUT! Cleaned him up and Klaasen is gone. On a good length, Klaasen swings across the line and misses as the ball keeps a bit low. 

Marco Jansen comes in next. Starts off with a single through leg-side. Pulled away to deep square-leg by Miller for one more. Another single at deep third by Jansen to end the over.

Mustafizur bowls his third over. Starts off with three consecutive dot balls. A leg-bye next ball and that’s the 50-run partnership between Klaasen and Miller off 56 balls. Rishah Hossain again. FOUR! Short and a bit of width and Klaasen rocks back and cuts it past point for a boundary. Drifted outside leg-stump to Miller and he flicks it away with ease for two more. Some extra bounce on this occasion and it beats Klaasen’s attempted cut shot. Klaasen is beaten again off the last ball of the over. 

Taskin is back for his third over. Just three runs from it as Taskin keeps pitching it on a good length. 

Mahmudullah into the attack. Beaten! The ball turns away a touch and beats Miller’s outside edge. Looks like there was a bit of an outside edge and the wicketkeeper dropped it. Just four runs from the over. 

Rishad Hossain is back. In the slot and Klaasen slogs it towards midwicket for a SIX. Much needed boundary. Back to back sixes in the same region. Good over for SA after a long time. 

Shakib Al Hasan into the attack. Both Miller and Klaasen are dealing in singles. Six runs from the over. 

Mustafizur continues. Quite a few plays and misses. Batters remain unsettled. A touch fuller by Rahman and Klaasen drives it past mid on for four. Six runs from the over. 

Rishad Hossain into the attack. Miller gets one in the slot and slogs it towards midwicket for four. There’s spin in the surface. Six runs from the over. 

Mustafizur Rahman into the attack. Just one run in first four balls so far. And just one run from the final over of the PowerPlay.
