Everton has sacked manager Marco Silva in the wake of its Merseyside derby loss to Liverpool on Wednesday. The Toffees dropped into the Premier League relegation zone after suffering a 5-2 defeat to its neighbours at Anfield.
The club announced the sacking of Silva on Thursday, ending the Portuguese tactician's 18-month stay at Goodison Park. Owner Farhad Moshiri travelled to Liverpool to be at the club on Thursday, an indication that Silva's time was up.
In a statement, Everton said: "Everton Football Club can confirm that manager Marco Silva has left the club." The club said fan favourite Duncan Ferguson – who has been a first-team coach at the club since 2014 – would take charge for Saturday's match against Chelsea.
- Ratcliffe surprised by lack of immediate replacement -
Everton great Kevin Ratcliffe has questioned why the club did not follow the sacking of manager Silva by immediately appointing a permanent successor.
"I'm quite surprised, with the way results have been going, that they haven't had somebody to come in straight away," Ratcliffe, Everton's last league title-winning captain in 1986-87, told Sky Sports News.
"A bit like Tottenham when [Mauricio] Pochettino left and [Jose] Mourinho came in for him.
"They've had time to assess it and maybe approach somebody and that hasn't been done obviously because they haven't made a decision, or if they have got somebody that they have got in mind there's a stumbling block along the way somewhere."
- Thanks for everything, teacher – Richarlison bids farewell to Silva -
Everton forward Richarlison – who had also played under Silva at Watford – has thanked the Portuguese manager after the struggling side made the decision to sack its under-pressure manager.
Richarlison arrived as the Silva's first signing in 2018, and has been a consistent performer at Goodison Park, scoring 21 goals in all competitions for Everton, while also establishing himself as a regular in the Brazil team.
The 22-year-old, who has previously referred to the former Hull City coach as a father figure, signed a new long-term deal with Everton this week, and ultimately scored what proved to be the final goal of Silva's tenure – having netted the first two in a 2-2 draw at Wolves on the opening day of last season.
"Thanks for everything, teacher! Especially for the care and attention that made me grow and become better in every way," Richarlison tweeted.
"I will never forget everything you did for me. I'll always be in the crowd!"
