In pictures: Sweden comes from behind to knock out two-time champion Germany

Sofia Jakobsson and Stina Blackstenius were the heroes in Sweden's comeback victory, which saw Germany undergo a third quarterfinal defeat at the World Cup. The Swedes will face Netherlands in the semifinal on July 3.

Sweden pulled off an upset on Saturday in Rennes as it came from behind to defeat Germany for the first time in a major tournament since 1995, and seal its semifinal clash against Netherlands.

Lina Magull opened the account for the Germans in the 16th minute with a scissor kick. This was her second goal of the tournament. Magull was assisted by Sara Dabritz, who was directly involved in more goals than any other Germany player at the 2019 Women’s World Cup (3 goals, 1 assist).

Sofia Jakobsson pulled one back six minutes later to keep Sweden in the game. It was the first goal Germany conceded in the tournament.

Stina Blackstenius completed Sweden's comeback as she found the net early in the second half (48'). She became only the second Sweden player to score in consecutive knockout appearances at the World Cup after Lena Videkull in 1991.

The 2-1 result meant this was Germany’s third quarterfinal defeat at the World Cup (alongside 2011 vs Japan and 1999 vs USA). Germany has been eliminated at the quarterfinal stage in two of the last three editions of the tournament.
