82’

Depay, who scored the first goal for the men in orange tonight, has been subbed off. Xavi Simons comes on.

81’ DUMFRIES SCORES

After two assists, Dumfries scores one himself. USA could not clear the ball inside the box and Dumfries, unmarked at the left post, calmly slotted the ball into the far corner with a simple left-footed strike.

80’

Corner for USA but it is collected easily by Noppert.

77’

Wright is released on the right but Noppert comes out of his box to make the clearance and maintain the Dutch lead. USA is going for it.

76’ WRIGHT SCORES!!!!

One of the most outrageous finishes ever from Haji Wright to bring the Americans back in this match. Following a USA corner, Wright flicked the ball over Noppert and the Dutch defence with his right toe to find the far post.

75’

Misplaced pass from Depay in his own half after being pressed by a player in white shirt sends Wright through but instead of chipping the approaching Noppert, he goes wide which makes the angle difficult. Still, the Dutch defender behind Noppert takes no chance and clears it behind for a corner. USA brings in Yedlin for Dest.

74’

Reyna goes for the kill from the edge of the Dutch box and the ball misses the goal by miles.

71’

Double save from Turner!!!! A long-range effort from Koopmeiners is kept out at the near post by the American keeper before stopping Depay’s header on the rebound.

69’

68’

Timber fouled near the halfway line by Aaronson after he steals the ball cleanly from the American.

67’

Double change for USA. Weah and McKennie are off. Aaronson and Wright are in.

65’

Robinson is taking time to recover from that clash with Dumfries. An injury is not what the USMNT would want at this point.

63’

Dumfries is brought down by Robinson inside the USA box after he is released via excellent through ball from Depay. USA looks to counter attack with Dumfries still down. Timothy Weah with an attempt from the edge of the Dutch box but it is blocked.

61’

Yet again, nothing comes off the USA free kick except a Dutch counter attack. Turner saves!!! Depay with a strike from the edge of the box after Gakpo’s initial shot was blocked. Turner palms the ball over the bar for a corner.

60’

Another free kick for USA in the Dutch half as this time, Koopmeiners brings down Pulisic.

59’

Virgil van Dijk brings down Pulisic close to the Dutch box. Free kick for USA. Pulisic sends it in but van Dijk heads it out.

57’

USA has upped the ante in the second half. One goal from the Americans could put the Dutch defense under even more pressure.

55’

Lovely one-two between Gakpo and Bergwijn on the right wing but Robinson does well to recover in time and pass the ball to Turner before Gakpo could get to it inside the box.

54’

Another attack from USA. Gio Reyna down the left side makes a brilliant run before bringing the ball into the box and laying it up for an unmarked McKennie at the centre who skies the ball with his left foot.

53’

Much easier save for Noppert after a shot from Pulisic from the edge of the box. Didn’t have much power in it.

50’

Turner saves!!! Reflex save from the US goalkeeper after Depay was set up for an easy tap-in at the near post.

49’

Goal-line clearance from the Dutch defence after it failed to head away the corner taken by Pulisic. Weston McKennie almost opens USA’s account.

48’

Netherlands has made two changes: Koopmeiners and Bergwijn are on for De Roon and Klaassen. USA has replaced Ferreira with Reyna

46’

Second half begins! USA takes the opening kick as it plays from left to right.

HALF-TIME: NETHERLANDS 2-0 USA

Netherlands in complete control of the game at the moment. A two-goal lead will be tough to erase for the Americans but weird things have happened at this World Cup. So, you can not rule out a comeback. Stay tuned for what could be a blockbuster second half.

45+1’ BLIND MAKES IT 2-0 FOR THE DUTCH

Throw-in for the Dutch on the right side of the US box. Dumfries sends it in before receiving the ball back. Another sublime cut back from Dumfries and this time, he finds Daley Blind in the middle who strikes with his right foot. It takes a slight deflection off Zimmerman who puts his body on the line and settles into the bottom left corner.

One minute of added time.

45’

Sergino Dest with a solo effort gets the ball into the Dutch box before looking for a teammate. However, Dutch skipper Virgil van Dijk blocks it. A fierce counter-attack from the men in orange sees Gakpo fighting for the ball with a sole American in the US half.

43’

Noppert saves!!! Poor clearance from the Dutch defense allows Weah to blast one at the bottom right corner with his right foot. The Dutch stopper does well.

41’

Tim Weah with a brilliant run down the right wing. Weah passes it to Ferreira who has his back to the goal and is unable to control it. Pulisic reaches the ball and sends it to Robinson but the pass is a bit too wide.

40’

Foul on Pulisic by Timber near the halfway line. Free kick to the Americans.

38’

Musah’s through-ball is kept in play by Pulisic before Dest puts in the cross from the left of the Dutch box. Robinson is there at the far post but the Dutch defender heads it away first.

36’

Foul by Zimmerman on Depay at the halfway line.

35’

USA has had plenty of possession but except for that early attempt on goal from Pulisic, nothing to show for it.

33’

Through ball from Robinson from the back but Noppert gets to it first.

30’

Misplaced pass by a US player sends Dumfries through on the right wing. Dumfries puts in the cross but this time, it is cleared away.

29’

The first corner kick is cleared behind. Another one for the Dutch team. Another clearance but it finds De Jong outside the box who goes for the aerial pass looking for Dumfries on the right edge of the box. However, it has too much in it. Goal kick for USA.

28’

Depay wins a corner for Netherlands. Excellent work by Zimmerman to block the cut back.

27’

A little bit of hesitancy in the US defense as it looks to play from the back. A heavy touch from Turner almost allowed a Dutch player to latch onto it and score.

25’

That strike in the 10th minute was a big one for Memphis Depay. It was his 43rd international goal and he is now only seven behind Robin van Persie’s all-time Dutch record of 50.

24’

Weston McKennie’s attempted cross from the right is blocked. USA just not able to find a way through.

22’

Dumfries stands tall like a wall and does not allow Pulisic to go through on the left wing. No foul given as referee says play on.

21’

Depay with a shot from right side of the USA box. It misses Turner and the far post too. Goal-kick for USA.

18’

Netherlands on the charge. Gakpo with the ball. The youngster lays it up for Blind who is unmarked inside the box on the left but Blind skies it over the bar.

16’

Robinson charges into the Dutch box with the ball before giving a right-footed pass which is cleared by the Dutch defence.

14’

Tyler Adams goes down inside his own half after apparently being hit in the face by Dumfries’ arm.

13’

Pulisic puts in the ball from the right but before the pas could find a tap-in from any American, the Dutch team clears it away.

12’

The USA hasn’t won any of the previous 24 World Cup matches in which its trailed at any point.

10’ DEPAY SCORES

Excellent charge from the Dutch team. Dumfries with a perfect ball into the USA box from the right. Depay, unmarked in the middle, slots the ball into the bottom left corner with a right-footed strike.

9’

Depay takes the ball into the USA box from the left but makes a mess of the attempted shot. Easy clearance for USA.

8’

Pulisic’s cross from the left of the box is cleared by Ake. USA with the early aggression.

7’

Corner for USA as Dumfries, under pressure from Robinson, is forced to make a clearance which goes behind. Pulisic takes the corner kick but it goes across the face of the goal without finding any American touch.

5’

Musah puts the ball into the Dutch box from the right. It takes a deflection off a Dutch defender’s leg before finding Weah. However, no harm done eventually.

3’

Sergino Dest with a cross from the right side of the box. Initially cleared but Tyler Adams sends a beautiful lob pass which leave Noppert in a one-on-one situation against Pulisic. Left-footed striker from Pulisic stopped by the left leg of the Dutch goalkeeper to keep it goalless.

Match Preview

After much posturing, the Netherlands now need to deliver if it is to fulfil its own prophecy at the World Cup, starting with the opening clash of the knockout stage against the United States on Saturday.

There has been much talk -- all from the Dutch camp -- of the team’s potential to go all the way in the tournament in Qatar, principally from veteran coach Louis van Gaal, who enjoys a little mental coaxing and sparring.

Netherlands vs USA Predicted XI
Netherlands: Andries Noppert; Jurrien Timber, Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake; Denzel Dumfries, Marten de Roon, Frenkie de Jong, Daley Blind; Davy Klaassen; Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo
USA: Matt Turner; Sergino Dest, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Tim Ream, Antonee Robinson; Tyler Adams, Yunus Musah, Weston McKennie; Christian Pulisic, Josh Sargent, Timothy Weah.

But although it won its first-round group, there was little evidence to back up its self-confidence as it stuttered through against Senegal, Ecuador and the Qatari hosts.

That will offer hope to the Americans, who will be underdogs for their last-16 clash but who have already offered up some proof of their potential in an unbeaten run in Group B, with draws against England and Wales and a gritty win over Iran to ensure their progress.

USA coach Gregg Berhalter said his team would have no inferiority complex at the Khalifa International Stadium on Saturday.

“It’s a great opportunity, but it’s not something that we’re going into it thinking is an honour,” Berhalter said.

“We deserve to be in the position we’re in. And we want to keep going. We don’t want to be going home on Saturday.

“And from here anything can happen. All we need to do is play one game at a time. There’s no need to even project how far this team can go,” added Berhalter, who has an intimate knowledge of Dutch football. The 49-year-old played in the Dutch league for three different clubs between 1996 and 2000.

INDISPENSABLE

For the Netherlands, key will be to get Memphis Depay firing in attack and Frenkie de Jong more influential in the middle. Van Gaal has described them both as indispensable to the Dutch cause but they have not yet shown that.

Depay says he is over his hamstring injury, having made two substitute appearances and started their last group game.

“I have drawn a line under the questions about fitness,” he told reporters.

“I’m fit. The knockout phase is serious business. We are past the group phase, we can now not afford to slip into it. Many people thought it would be a piece of cake, but it is always a bit different.”

The 71-year-old Van Gaal was keen not to underestimate the opposition.

“I know from experience that matches against countries such as the United States and Australia, who we encountered at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, are always very difficult,” he said.

“They are very fanatical and sharp on the ball.”

The winner of the match will advance to a quarterfinal meeting with either Argentina or Australia on Dec. 9.
