Rickie Fowler will carry a one-shot lead into the final round of the Phoenix Open as Jon Rahm surged into contention Saturday.

Fowler, a two-time runner-up at the PGA Tour event, carded a four-under 67 in the third round at TPC Scottsdale to move into 14 under.

The American has enjoyed another consistent showing in Arizona and is well-placed for a first Tour win since February last year.

Fowler was even for the round through 12 holes, but he birdied 13 and his final three.

The final round shapes as being an enthralling one after Rahm fired a six-under 65 to move into a tie for second.

Rahm, who won the CareerBuilder Challenge last month, is a shot adrift after also finishing strongly, the Spaniard making five birdies on the back nine.

Joining Rahm in a tie for second are Chez Reavie (67) and Bryson DeChambeau (68).

Xander Schauffele (66), three-time champion Phil Mickelson (66) and Daniel Berger (68) are at 12 under.

Last year's US PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas endured a rollercoaster round, shooting an even-par 71.

The American birdied his first six holes and appeared set to charge up the leaderboard.

However, Thomas' back nine was largely forgettable, including a triple bogey at the par-five 15th – where he found water off the tee – as he was left in a tie for 26th.
