Henrik Stenson celebrates winning The Open.

Henrik Stenson moved up to fifth place in the official world golf rankings after his stunning success at The Open.

Stenson carded the lowest four-round total in major history at Royal Troon to end his wait for a first major victory. In a thrilling head-to-head battle with Phil Mickelson, both players surged clear of the field before an enthralling last-pair contest on Sunday.

After Stenson and Mickelson had each edged ahead in the final round, the Swede birdied four of the last five holes to snatch the Claret jug away from his playing partner, whose 17-under score would have won all but four of The Open's previous editions.

Stenson reached a career-high ranking of number two in the world in 2014, and said after his success at Royal Troon: "We're only just getting started, aren't we? You never know once you open the floodgates what might happen."

Bubba Watson made way for Stenson in the top five, with Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy ahead of the Swede in the rankings. Sergio Garcia moved back into the top 10 on the back of a tied-fifth finish in Scotland, while Mickelson climbed six places to 13th.

JB Holmes was the biggest mover inside the top 20 after finishing third - some 11 shots adrift of Mickelson - starting the week 16th in the world, having gained eight places.
