Hockey World Cup 2018 quarterfinal: Germany 1-2 Belgium

Belgium comes from a goal down to defeat Germany 2-1 in their 2018 Hockey World Cup quarterfinal game at the Kalinga stadium in Bhubaneswar.

FULL TIME: Belgium has defeated two-time champion Germany and progresses to the semifinals, where it will take on England. It will be Belgium maiden appearance in the semis and what an effort to get there. It got past the world number 6 and will face the world number 7 next.

 

59' Incredible pressure from Germany but the final pass has been lacking more than once. And Belgium wins the ball and takes it to a corner.

57' Windfeder's long pass is intercepted but Haner is there ri win back possessin. Less then three minutes left for Germany to find an equaliser.

56' Grambusch has two good opportunities in the space of a few seconds but he fails to pick the right pass the first time and gets tackled the second time.

55' Lukas Windfeder takes a shot from well outside the circle and Vanasch is happy to let it go into the goal. Another excuse to waste time from the restart.

54' Germany takes off its keeper and is replaced by Martin Haner. All-out attack now, something Belgium did against India in its last pool game.

53' Belgium is happy to sit back and defend now but seven minutes is a long time to defend against a team like Germany.

50' Tom Boon puts Belgium ahead! His second goal of the tournament and first from open play. Walter makes a good save off Briels but the rebound falls to Boon and he smashes it into the goal. Scrappy one but an all-important goal.

 

47' End-to-end stuff in the final quarter. One slip in defending from either team could prove to be very costly at this stage of the match.

45' The third quarter comes to an end and Germany will go into the final fifteen minutes on top. The next goal could decide the outcome of the match but it's hard to predict who will score next.

42' A push on Denayer and Belgium wins its ninth penalty corner. Hendrickx takes it and Germany manages to clear and launches a counter. Belgium players rush back to defend which ends with the Belgium players asking for a referral for a high ball. Good call that as the replays back their claims and the decision goes their way.

STAT Germany has upped its games this quarter. It has made 9 circle penetration, more than what it made in the first two quarters combined!

39' The Indian team is on the sidelines watching the game as Gougnard is stopped in his tracks in the middle of the pitch.

38' Dockier picks up a green card and Belgium is down to 10 players for two minutes.

37' Belgium wins a penalty corner. Hendrickx takes it, as expected, and Tobias is there to deny him again!  If not for the German keeper, Belgium could have taken a 3 or 4 goal lead.

36' Its Niklas Wellen's turn this time to show his pace and Belgium at sixes and sevens there but somehow manage to clear.  And Grambusch gets a change immediately after his his shot is saved.

34' Timm Herzbrusch runs into the Belgium circle from his half and his shot is saved by Vincent Vanasch. Impressive change in pace from the Germany.

 

32' Rhur is walking the fine line this game. That's the second time he could have picked up a green card for a silly foul.

31' Germany gets the second half underway and Belgium steals possession immediately.

30' The first half comes to an end and it's Germany 1 - 1 Belgium. Belgium has played with confidence in this quarter and has been the dominant team. We'll back after a 15 minute break to see who will progress to the semifinals, where England awaits.

 

27' Germany started the game aggressively but Belgium, since Germany took the lead, has pegged the two0time champions back with some intelligent play.

24' Germany's attack has only come from the center (60%) or the right (40%), nothing from the left side.

23' Hendrickx takes this penalty corner and Walter pulls off another impressive save.  The German keeper has shown exceptional reflexes in this game.

 

22' Mathias tries to tackle Charlier inside the circle but it a clumsy challenge and Belgium wins a penalty corner. The shot from the corner hits Grambusch's foot and Belgium wins another penalty corner.

21' Dockier is denied by another good save by Walter.

18' Belgium makes the penalty corner count and Hendrickx makes it 1-1!

17' Belgium has started the second quarter strongly and its two good attacks have come down the right through Simon Gougnard. He is finding enough room to run into and Germany will want to track his runs better.

15' Belgium wins a penalty corner in the final minute of this quarter. It hits a leg and it wins a second penalty corner, which is well saved by Tobias Walter but Belgium gets a third penalty corner. And Walter makes another fantastic save and with that the first quarter comes to an end.

14'GERMANY TAKES THE LEAD! Belgium caught napping in defence and Dieter Linnekogel breaks the deadlock.

 

12' Grambusch dribbles his way into the Belgium circle and goes all the way till the goal but his final pass is intercepted by Sebastien Dockier.  Game saving steal from the striker.

8' Alexander Hendrickx takes it and sees his shot deflected for a long corner. Had Belgium scored here, it coulld've been a big talking point.

7' Thomas Briels asks for a video referral for a possible foul on him by Arthur van Doren. The replays aren't conclusive about a push but the ball hots the foot and Belgium wins a penalty corner. Grambusch says the ball hit the foot after the referee initially blew the whistle and he isn't wrong there. Harsh on Germany.

4' It has been an aggressive start from Germany. With it having some of the game's best attackers, it's not a surprise. Belgium has been on the backfoot as of now and finding it difficult to put together a meaningful attack.

3' Christopher Rhur steals the ball and prevents a Belgium counter-attack but the referee doesn't agree that it was a clean interception. Rhur doesn't agree and knocks the ball away after the referee's whistle. Could've been a green card if this didn't happen in the opening minutes.

2' Mats Grambusch in the thick of things in the opening minutes. He is yet to score in this tournament. Will he break the duck today?

1' Belgium, in the all-red strip, gets the first quarter of this quarterfinal match undeway.

 

STAT: Germany has made the semis 11 times till date, but finished only sixth in 2014. Belgium, on the other hand, hasn't gone beyond the quarterfinals ever.
