Quite a few records

NOTABLE lifters raised their level just a bit higher and brought down quite a few National records in the National Games at Patiala.

With Kunjarani Devi and K. Malleswari away from competitions for different reasons, it was left to some of the other leading ladies, Bharti Singh, P. Shailaja, Pratima Kumari and the lesser-known Prasmita Mangaraj, to re-write some of the records.

In the men's section, Punjab's Tajinder Singh and Gurminder Singh were the record-makers.

Records apart, the favourites in various categories lived up to expectations. Tamil Nadu's T. Muthu and Karnataka's Satish Rai retained their titles, in the 56 kg and 77 kg, respectively.

As in the past, the women lifters did better. It was in the 58 kg class that the snatch record changed hands more than once. Holder K. Krishna Kumari (Andhra Pradesh) improved upon her mark of 80.0 kgs by raising 82.5. Soon, Karnataka's Chandrashouri Devi successfully attempted 85.0, but eventually, it was gold-winner, Orissa's Prasmita Mangaraj, who lifted 87.5 to own the record.

In the 63 kg category, Manipur's Nanshita Devi's records lay shattered. Haryana's Pratima Kumari set records in snatch and total while AP's P. Haritha made the mark in clean and jerk.

P. Shailaja expectedly dominated the 75 kg category just as Bharti Singh did while improving her own records in the over 75 kg class.

In the men's 85 kg, Tajinder Singh improved upon his own record of 145.0 by 2.5 kgs in snatch and captured the gold. However, his total of 315 was 2.5 kgs less than what he had lifted for silver at Imphal in 1999.

Gurminder Singh added to the woes of K. S. Muthu in the 105 kg category. The Punjab lifter broke Muthu's clean and jerk record as well as the mark of total lift. Even as Gurminder took the gold, Muthu had to settle for silver.
