Mahajan, Snehal are national pickleball champions
Kuldip Mahajan of Maharashtra won the men’s singles title, while Divyanshu Kataria (Rajasthan) and Sonukumar (Jharkhand) won the silver and bronze medals respectively in the third National Ranking Pickleball Tournament.
Maharashtra made a clean sweep in the women’s singles with Snehal Patil, Vrushali Thakare and Urvi Abhyanka claiming the gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. Snehal went on to bag a double crown when she clinched the Under-19 mixed doubles with Aditya Singh in the tournament that concluded on Sunday.
Keen to promote the sport, Goa chief minister Dr Pramod Sawant said the state has the potential to become an “international hub” for pickleball.
“I believe Goa has the potential to become not just a national hub, but also an international hub for pickleball. Let’s work towards promoting and developing this exciting sport in our beautiful State,” Dr Sawant said.
Pickleball is a sport that combines many elements of tennis, badminton and ping-pong. It is played with a paddle and plastic ball with holes in a badminton-sized court.

Ganemat and Anantjeet miss the cut to fight for a medal
Ganemat Sekhon and Anantjeet Singh Naruka shot a combined score of 142 and missed the chance to fight for a medal by one point in mixed skeet in the shotgun World Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on Wednesday.
It was another fine performance by Ganemat who had clinched the individual silver on Tuesday.
Italians dominated the event by winning the gold and bronze, while host Kazakhstan got the silver. It was the second medal for Assem Orynbay of Kazakhstan who had won the women’s individual gold earlier with a strong performance.

French Open: Ankita bows out in second round of qualifying
India’s Ankita Raina went down 6-7(1), 1-6 to Japan’s Moyuka Uchijima in an hour and 46 minutes in the second round of qualifying at the French Open in Paris on Wednesday.
At the ATP250 event in Lyon, the Indian duo of Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni lost 1-6, 2-6 to French-Dutch pair of Nicolas Mahut and Matwe Middelkoop in the quarterfinals.

Leander Paes, Yatin Gupte acquire latest franchise from Bengal in Tennis Premier League season 5
Tennis Icon, Leander Paes and Yatin Gupte, chairman of Wardwizard group, has come together to acquire a team from Kolkata, which is set to compete in the season 5 of the Tennis Premier League.
They will compete against the likes of the Pune Jaguars, co-owned by Sonali Bendre, Hyderabad Strikers, co-owned by Rakul Preet Singh, Bengaluru Spartans whose ambassador is Sania Mirza and Punjab Tigers, co-owned by Taapsee Pannu.
All games of the revolutionary Tennis Premier League will be played in the Balewadi Stadium in Pune in association with the All India Tennis Association (AITA) and Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA).
Speaking on why it made sense for him to come on-board as the co-owner of the franchise, Indian tennis icon, Leander Paes, said “I am glad to be the face and co-owner of the team as Kolkata is my hometown, it’s where I have some of my fondest memories from. The South Club in Kolkata is the most iconic tennis venue in the country that has hosted the most number of Davis Cup matches in India and has even produced legendary Indian tennis players such as Jaidip Mukerjea and Zeeshan Ali to name a few. I am sure that the presence of a team from Bengal will make season 5 of the Tennis Premier League even bigger than the previous editions.”

Sahaja enters pre-quarters in Monastir
Sahaja Yamalapalli beat Elizaveta Shebekina 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the $25,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament in Monastir, Tunisia, on Wednesday.
Sahaja had earlier made the doubles quarterfinals in partnership with Wang Jiaqi of China on Tuesday.

National sub-junior championship: Nainika knocks out top seed Sejal
Nainika Bendram knocked out the top seed Sejal Bhutada 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(5) in the girls pre-quarterfinals of the Ramesh Desai memorial National sub-junior tennis championship at the KDLTA Complex on Wednesday.
In the boys section, Praneel Sharma ousted the top seed Dhiraj Reddy 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 to enter the quarterfinals.

Top players to compete in Kolkata bridge meet
Top Indian players and participants from Bangladesh will be seen in action in the sixth All India Shree Cement Bridge Championship (Category One), beginning on Thursday.
The 400-odd participants will also include men and women teams, who won four gold medals at the Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East Championship in Pakistan earlier this month, former international and secretary of Corporate Bridge Association of India Debasish Ray said in a statement.
Eighty-five-year-old Kamal Mukherjee, who has won many laurels for India, will also be seen in action.
The four-day championship which will be held for both team and pair events will offer a total prize purse of Rs 7 lakh.
