This week in 1899

on April 3:

All-rounder Jimmy Sinclair (106) registered South Africa’s first ever Test hundred — against England at Cape Town. Two days earlier, he had claimed six English wickets (6/26) and thus became the first player in Test history to score a hundred and also claim a five-wicket haul in the same Test match!

Queries Corner

In the recent T20I match in Centurion, M. S. Dhoni managed to score only the second fifty of his T20I career. His maiden fifty had come just a year ago. What is MSD’s T20I record before and after his maiden fifty?

— Vikas Singh, Meerut

M. S. Dhoni’s maiden fifty (56) in T20I cricket came against England in Bangalore on Feb. 1, 2017. It came in his 76th match and 66th innings. His T20I record prior to this knock and since then is given below.

Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan was 19 when he became the youngest captain. Who has been India’s youngest captain?

— Ashish Khakar, Baroda

Rashid Khan, at 19 years, 165 days, became the first teenager to captain in any international format. He did so in an ODI match against Scotland in Bulawayo on March 4, 2018. The youngest from India was the Nawab of Pataudi jr (Mansoor Ali Khan) who was 21 years, 77 days when he captained his side in a Test match against the West Indies in Bridgetown in March 1962. But the youngest Indian captain in an ODI match is Sachin Tendulkar who was 23 years, 126 days, against Sri Lanka in Colombo on August 28, 1996. In T20Is, Suresh Raina, at 23 years, 197 days is the youngest to lead India, against Zimbabwe in Harare on June 12, 2010.

Both the New Zealand openers (Martin Guptill and Colin Munro) were dismissed before they opened their accounts in the recent ODI in Dunedin against England. And yet New Zealand managed to reach the 300-plus target. Is this the first time a side managed a 300-plus score after losing its openers before they opened their accounts?

Navneet Ahuja, Delhi

Yes, this is now the highest ODI total by a side after both the openers were dismissed without opening their account. Interestingly the previous highest total was the 280/7 by India against Zimbabwe in Adelaide in January 2004, after Indian openers Sanjay Bangar and Parthiv Patel were dismissed before they had opened their accounts.

In the Johannesburg T20 match three South African batsmen were dismissed “c Raina b Bhuvneshwar”. Is this unique?

Ravi Shriyan, Mumbai

Such dismissals by the same fielder/bowler combination in the same innings are quite rare. However once before in T20Is, this has occurred when three Irish batsmen were dismissed by Papua New Guinea’s fielder/bowler combination ‘c S. L. Siaka b P. Raho” at Townsville in February 2016.
