In badminton, with a 21-18, 23-21 victory over P.V. Sindhu, Saina Nehwal obtained her second Commonwealth Games singles gold.
M.C. Mary Kom created history by becoming India’s first woman boxer to claim a Commonwealth Games gold medal.
In tennis, Yuki Bhambri defeated Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the Tapei Challenger title in Chinese Taipei. Rafael Nadal beat Kei Nishikori in Monte Carlo Masters. Nadal also clinched his 11th Barcelona Open title.
Lows
Arsène Wenger announced that he would be leaving Arsenal at the end of the season. Wenger’s departure was the end of an era as he served the club for 22 years.
CSK’s return to IPL switched on the Chepauk Stadium lights in Chennai. But the happiness was cut-short as the Cauvery water dispute played the villain and shifted all CSK home matches (except the first game against Kolkata Knight Riders) to Pune to avoid political tension.
Two-time IPL winning captain and former India opener Gautam Gambhir hit a rough patch in the cash-rich league. Low scores and string of defeats forced him to step down as captain of Delhi Daredevils. He passed the leadership duties to Shreyas Iyer in the middle of the tournament.
