Highs

Cristiano Ronaldo (for Real Madrid) had scored off a stunning bicycle kick against Juventus in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinal. He joined the Italian club in three months time.

 

New Zealand tail-enders Ish Sodhi 56* (168) and Neil Wagner 7 (103) survived 188 balls to add only 37 runs for the eighth wicket in the second Test against England in Christchurch. The partnership helped the Kiwis save the Test and win the series 1-0 — a first over England after 24 years.

Chennai Super Kings returned to the IPL — after a two-year suspension — with a thrilling one-wicket win over Mumbai Indians in the opening game. Dwayne Bravo led the yellow brigade to victory with a 30-ball 68.

India finished with 26 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.

The Indian women's table tennis team defeated Singapore 3-1 to clinch the historic gold medal at the CWG. Manika Batra became India’s first ever table tennis gold medallist in women’s singles.

India's teenage shooting sensation Manu Bhaker won her first CWG gold in 10m air pistol in shooting.

In weightlifting, Punam Yadav clinched gold with a total lift of 222kg, finishing above England's Sarah Davies. Mirabai Chanu smashed the Commonwealth and the Games record in snatch, pulling off clean lifts in all her three attempts, to win gold. Sanjita Chanu clinched India's second gold medal at the Games by cruising through to win the 48kg category.

In badminton, with a 21-18, 23-21 victory over P.V. Sindhu, Saina Nehwal obtained her second Commonwealth Games singles gold.

M.C. Mary Kom created history by becoming India’s first woman boxer to claim a Commonwealth Games gold medal.

In tennis, Yuki Bhambri defeated Ramkumar Ramanathan 6-3, 6-4, to clinch the Tapei Challenger title in Chinese Taipei. Rafael Nadal beat Kei Nishikori in Monte Carlo Masters. Nadal also clinched his 11th Barcelona Open title.

Lows

Arsène Wenger announced that he would be leaving Arsenal at the end of the season. Wenger’s departure was the end of an era as he served the club for 22 years.

CSK’s return to IPL switched on the Chepauk Stadium lights in Chennai. But the happiness was cut-short as the Cauvery water dispute played the villain and shifted all CSK home matches (except the first game against Kolkata Knight Riders) to Pune to avoid political tension. 

Two-time IPL winning captain and former India opener Gautam Gambhir hit a rough patch in the cash-rich league. Low scores and string of defeats forced him to step down as captain of Delhi Daredevils. He passed the leadership duties to Shreyas Iyer in the middle of the tournament.
