The Special General Body of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), which met here on Wednesday, has clarified that all members of the ‘preceding Executive Council’ with no time limit, would be eligible to contest the election, scheduled to be held on December 14.
Earlier, the nominations were accepted only from members who were part of the 2012 and 2014 Council, and thus it was believed that the election process could be delayed by a fortnight to give a chance for the eligible candidates to file their nominations, following the clarity on interpretation of the specific clause.
Understandably, the matter has already been taken up with the Election Commission.
Meanwhile, with the original nomination deadline being met on Tuesday, the secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), Rajeev Mehta, ensured his candidature for a second term in the same post, with four nominations, but will have no rival in the election slated to be held on December 14.

Interestingly, among the four proposers were Anil Khanna and Narinder Batra, both of whom are contesting the election for the post of president, being vacated by N. Ramachandran, the president of the World Squash Federation.
Birendra Prasad Baishya was the other candidate for the post of president. Interestingly, one of the seconders for Batra’s four nominations was Anil Khanna himself.
Rakesh Gupta, Mukesh Kumar and Anandeshwar Pandey will be contesting the post of treasurer being vacated by Anil Khanna.
As per the original process that has been set in motion, nominations will be scrutinised on Thursday, and a final list is scheduled to be published by 2 p.m. the same day.
The withdrawal deadline is December 3. The elections are scheduled to be held on December 14, from 11 a.m., as part of the Annual General Meeting.
The IOA election has SK Mendiratta as the Returning Officer.
