Neeraj Chopra had initially wanted to test himself in competition before the season ended.

The biggest attraction at the 59th National Open Athletics Championships beginning Thursday, Neeraj Chopra has withdrawn from the meet after being advised to 'go slow' by the federation.

The AFI had initially allowed him to participate on Tuesday with Chopra wanting to test himself in competition before the season ended. But a day later, the federation seems to have had a change of heart.

"This is a collective decision by the national coaches, our German experts and federation officials. We don't think he is competition ready," AFI president Adille Sumariwalla told Sportstar

Chopra underwent elbow surgery in May and started throwing in training recently. He has been training under German biomechanical expert Dr. Klaus Bartonietz, and would continue doing so in Patiala.
