Lakshya Sen, Mugdha Agrey in focus in Tata Open Badminton

Asian junior champion, Lakshya Sen, is seeded number two behind fellow Indian Mithun Manjunath in men’s singles at the 11th Tata Open India International Badminton Challenge 2018. Top two seeds in women’s singles are Ksenia Polikarpova (Israel) and Phittayaporn Chaiwan (Thailand) respectively at the event that is to be held at the Cricket Club of India courts from November 28 to December 2.

Shuttlers from 13 nations, including Asian badminton powerhouses, will be taking part in the $ 25,000 prize-money event, hosted by the Tata group and Tata Capital, in association with Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy. Organised under the auspices of Maharashtra Badminton Association (MBA) and Badminton Association of India, it is sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Asia Confederations (BAC).

Prominent Indian face in the women’s singles draw is Mugdha Agrey (third seed), women’s doubles top seed pairing is Meghana J and Poorvisha Ram and men’s doubles second-seeded duo is Arun George and Sanyam Shukla combination. The event is part of the international circuit of tournaments that earns ranking points for players. This year, participating entries have come from Australia, Bahrain, Egypt, England, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Mauritius, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and USA.

The qualifying rounds will be on November 28 and 29, the main draw from November 30 onwards. Tak Ching Chang and Wing Yung Ng from Hong Kong have been seeded number one in mixed doubles, followed by the Thailand pair of Nipitphon Phuanghuapet and Savitree Amitrapai. Bahrain’s Ashley George will be the referee for the 2018 event, featuring 248 players.
