World champion Carolina Marin on Monday pulled out of the Australian Open to better prepare for the Rio Olympics.

"Back in Spain and I won't play in Australia! Recuperation and training. I will not play Australia Open! Sorry," Marin tweeted. The world-ranked No 1 added that she had suffered "some discomfort in Indonesia and we've come to Spain to recover and get ready for the most important thing: the Olympic Games. Thanks very much for all your support!"

Marin, 22, suffered a shock defeat at the Indonesian Open over the weekend, knocked out by fourth seed Wang Yihan from China in their semi-final.
