S.L. Narayanan drew with top seed Vladislav Artemiev in the fourth round of the World Junior Chess Championships in Bhubaneswar on Thursday. They now have 3.5 points from four rounds and are joined in the lead by Xiong, Germany’s Rasmus Svane, Masoud Mosadeghpour of Iran and Karthikeyan Murali of the host.
There is a long way to go yet though, as another nine rounds remain.
Playing on the white side of Grunfeld Defence, Narayanan had built a promising position, but he fumbled and let the game meander towards a draw. “Yes, I was much better, but could not capitalise,” admitted the 10th seed from Thiruvananthapuram.
His opponent admitted he had to defend correctly. “This was the toughest of my four games here,” said Artemiev.
In the girls’ event, Russia’s Dinara Dordzhieva and Janelle Mae Frayna of Philippines, seeded eighth and ninth respectively, are leading the table after capturing full four points apiece. Frayna shocked second seed Alina Bivol of Russia, while Dordzhieva prevailed over Nataliya Buksa of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, P.V. Nandhidhaa continued her impressive run, her latest victim being fifth seed Colombian Paula Rodriguez Rueda.
