Former Test umpire Dara Dotiwalla dies at 85

Dotiwalla officiated in six Test matches and eight ODIs between 1982 and 1988. He was suffering from age-related ailments and breathed his last around 4pm, confirmed his son-in-law Adi Mistry.

Dotiwalla is best remembered for officiating the Tied Test between India and Australia in Madras (now Chennai) in September 1986, along with Vikram Raju.

Former Test umpire Dara Dotiwalla passed away at his residence on Wednesday. He was 85.

Dotiwalla officiated in six Test matches and eight ODIs between 1982 and 1988. He was suffering from age-related ailments and breathed his last around 4pm, confirmed his son-in-law Adi Mistry.

Born on October 30, 1933, Dotiwalla is best remembered for officiating the Tied Test between India and Australia in Madras (now Chennai) in September 1986, along with Vikram Raju. That was the second tied Test in the history of cricket (the first was played between West Indies and Australia at the Gabba in December 1960).

Dotiwalla made his Test debut as an umpire on January 30, 1982 when he officiated the Test match between India and England in Kanpur. His last assignment as a Test umpire was the fixture between India and the West Indies in Delhi from November 25-29, 1987.

He will be given a traditional funeral at the Tower of Silence on Thursday.
