India Green opted to bat first against India Red in the Duleep Trophy final at the Chinnaswamy stadium on Wednesday. The decision backfired as the team ended Day 1 at a disappointing score of 147/8. But Jaydev Unadkat, who utilised the conditions to claim four wickets, revealed that India Red had a similar strategy in place.
“I guess it is a good toss to lose. We wanted to bat first as well after looking at the wicket before the game. If you had seen how it played in the last session, it’s a pretty good wicket to bat on. It’s just that we had weather was on our side and it was swinging in the air. It was cloudy and we bowled in the right areas and I think that’s why we could actually get those eight wickets,” he said.

Talking about his performance, he said: “ I have been bowling well since the start of the Duleep Trophy, and it is just the start of the season. Having prepared well, this performance will act as a confidence booster coming into the season. The weather was supporting us in the morning; the ball was doing a bit. It was all about the rhythm, which is always very important at the start of the season, and that is what a fast bowler wants.”
Virat Kohli had earlier, during the West Indies tour, expressed his displeasure at start-stop matches. There were five stoppages on Day 1 alone, but Unadkat maintained that the bowlers weren’t affected by the constant intervals.
“In a way, it is good as we can get some rest in between spells. Having said that you have to be aware of keeping yourself warm. It happened to me once where after second or third stoppage; I got some stiffness in my muscles, which is bound to happen if you do not warm up before you take the field. If you do take care of those minor aspects, it is a good thing for the bowlers to get that break.
