Avesh Khan kisses the turf after cleaning up Mohammad Mudassir at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Saturday.

It was a truly symbolic gesture when Avesh Khan bent low to kiss the turf to celebrate a stunning, 12-wicket haul. For, he was one of the architects as Madhya Pradesh drubbed Hyderabad by an innings and 253 runs on the third day of the Ranji Trophy Group B league match at Holkar Stadium here on Saturday.

On a day which was earlier made memorable for the home team with Ajay Rohera becoming the highest individual scorer on Ranji debut – scoring an unbeaten 267 to beat the previous record of Mumbaikar Amol Muzumdar (260 against Haryana in 1993-94 season) – Avesh ensured that he was not far behind the limelight. He bowled with fire especially in the post-lunch session after dismissing Hyderabad captain Akshath Reddy (4) cheaply in the morning session.

Once spinner Shubham Sharma earned a dubious decision for an lbw against opener Tanmay Agarwal after the lunch break, Hyderabad never really recovered. For, soon Avesh had southpaw B. Sandeep caught down the leg-side by captain and wicketkeeper Naman Ojha and soon had Himalay Agarwal clueless to one that swung way back to have him completely baffled and the stumps re-arranged.

Though Rohit Rayudu struck form with a gritty half-century, it was too late to change the course of the match as Shubham Sharma and Avesh ensured there were no escape routes by scripting a resounding win.

Madhya Pradesh now has 18 points from five matches while Hyderabad has 12 from five games.
