Inspirational Mahendra Singh Dhoni, captain of Chennai Super Kings, made his presence felt at the formal naming of the main entrance of the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium after late Dr. M. V. Sridhar before his team took on Sunrisers Hyderabad in an Indian Premier League league match here on Sunday.
Dhoni, acceding to the request of the Apex Council of Hyderabad Cricket Association, headed by Dr. G. Vivekanand, formally cut the ribbon to mark the occasion.
There were no speeches but a quiet way of paying tribute to one of the best administrators ever from the City — Dr. Sridhar.
It may be mentioned here that Sridhar was also former Hyderabad Ranji captain and one of the most prolific scorers in Ranji Trophy besides being Secretaary of HCA and also holding some of the high-profiles in the BCCI including General Manager (Operations) before his untimely death.
Dhoni, like many senior India players, has a special boding with Sridhar as he was also manager of the Indian team on the Australian tour when the infamous ‘Monkeygate’ scandal rocked the cricketing world and which also saw his communication skills handling the crisis with aplomb.
“We thought the best tribute to Dr Sridhar is with this kind of gesture. He was always a big source of support given his vast experience and knowledge of the game. We surely miss his expertise badly,” Dr. Vivek said.
Dhoni did not speak but quietly nodded in appreciation when the HCA officials were recalling the contribution of Dr. Sridhar to the game in general.
Also present on the occasion were Dr. Sridhar’s wife and his mother.
