‘Mystery’ spinner C.V. Varun, yet to figure in the TNCA first division league or any other game in the longer format, has found a place in the Tamil Nadu Ranji squad for the match against Hyderabad at Tirunelveli beginning November 12.

With R. Ashwin unavailable owing to his preparations for the Test series in Australia, both the State selectors and the team-management wanted a spinner who could pick wickets.

In the shorter formats, the TNPL, and the Vijay Hazare one-day competition, Varun had been impressive with his variations.

State selector D. Girish said to Sportstar , “You cannot classify him as a leg-spinner or an off-spinner. The things he does with the ball are unique. We believe he can pick wickets on any surface, and the team can use him in shorter spells of six overs to eight overs.”

Varun is likely to figure in the eleven against Hyderabad.

There have been two other changes in the side. With opener M. Vijay travelling with the India ‘A’ side to New Zealand, the selectors have opted for a middle-order batsman in Shahrukh Khan.

“Apart from the experienced Abhinav Mukund, we have two others openers in the squad in Kaushik Gandhi and N. Jagadeesan, so we picked Shahrukh,” said Girish.

And Tamil Nadu pace spearhead K. Vignesh is back in the side after recovering from a hamstring strain. He replaces all-rounder Vijay Shankar who will be busy with his India ‘A’ duties.
