VEL 174/9 in 20 overs: Chantham picks a single off Poonam's first ball. FOUR!!! Kate Cross hits it wide of long on to keep the chase alive. Only one of the next two and with this, barring anything extraordinary, Trailblazers is set to win this match. OUT!!! Cross provides catching practice to Arundhati at long off as Trailblazers wins the match by 16 runs but Women's T20 Challenge will have a new champion. Velocity needed to cross 158 to move ahead of Trailblazers on NRR and it did just that. Final - Supernovas vs Velocity on Saturday.

24 needed off the final over.

VEL 158/7 in 18 overs: Trailblazers uses DRS for a caught behind appeal against Simran but the ultra edge shows no spike. RUN OUT!!! Direct hit from Jemimah finds Radha Yadav short of her crease at the non-striker's end as the batters try to convert a single into a double. Velocity just need four but only have three wickets in hand now. Two singles off the next two. Richa Ghosh fails to collect the ball and the batters take a bye. Just one needed to qualify for the finals.

Renuka Singh back for her final over.

VEL 154/6 in 17 overs: A wide and two singles off the first three balls of Dunkley's second over. OUT!!!! Dunkley beats Navgire in the flight as the debutant steps out for another big hit only to miss the ball and get stumped. The debutant departs for a brilliant 69 off 34 and is applauded by her teammates. Simran Bahadur is the new batter. A short ball from Dunkley takes the inside edge of Simran's bat. The ball bounces over the keeper's head as the batters take a single.

Velocity just needs nine runs as once it crosses 158, it qualifies for the final courtesy of a better Net Run Rate compared to Trailblazers.

VEL 150/5 in 16 overs: OUT!!! Sneh Rana looks to go over cover but does not get the elevation. Mandhana takes a simple one. Radha Yadav comes in and gets off the mark as she drives one down the ground to pick up a single. FOUR!!! Navgire makes room and hits it over the fielders inside the circle on the off side. A single for Navgire and she'll keep strike for the next over.

Renuka with the ball in hand.

VEL 143/4 in 15 overs: Just four off Dunkley's over.

Sophia Dunkley with her gentle leg spin has been brought into the attack.

STRATEGIC TIME OUT: Velocity is just 19 runs away from making it to the final as the Trailblazers needs to restrict it to 158. However, the way Navgire is going, Velocity might pull this chase off.

VEL 139/4 in 14 overs: SIX!!!! Fastest fifty of the Women's T20 Challenge comes from the bat of KP Navgire (just 25 balls) as the debutant's mistimed hit goes through the hands of Arundhati Reddy at long on. SIX!!! Another one but this time, well over Arundhati's head.

Gayakwad to bowl her final over.

VEL 125/4 in 13 overs: Dropped! This one was slower through the air and spinning away. Richa spills the outside edge. Rana gets a boundary through square leg.

VEL 120/4 in 12 overs: Navgire shimmies down and hits one over Gayakwad's head. Half-a-chance as it dips just short of the long-off fielder. A couple of bobbles but Mandhana finally holds on to one at cover. Skipper Deepti departs. Rana scores a boundary off the final ball.

VEL 113/3 in 11 overs: OUT!!! Massive moment in the game as Wolvaardt steps out to hit Poonam Yadav out of the park only to edge the ball to keeper Richa Ghosh. Wolvaardt departs for 17. SIX!!!! Navgire comes down the track and despite the ball being out of her reach, times it well enough to go the distance. Eight off it.

VEL 105/2 in 10 overs: INSIDE EDGE!! Flighted one from Gayakwad, Navgire goes for the sweep and the ball takes the inside edge to go behind the keeper as the batter steal a couple. FOUR!!! Short from the left-arm spinner, Navgire goes back and pulls but what should have been just a single has turned into a boundary courtesy of a bad misfield by Jemimah Rodrigues at deep mid-wicket.

Gayakwad back for her second over.

VEL 96/2 in 9 overs: Short from Arundhati, Navgire pulls it but does not get enough power on it and settles for a single. FOUR!!! This time, she does get enough on the pull. Navgire 29* off 11. FOUR!! Arundhati commits the same mistake and Laura Wolvaardt does not miss opportunities like that.

VEL 84/2 in 8 overs: FOUR!!! Navgire looks in excellent touch as he shifts her weight to the back foot and hits Poonam Yadav over extra cover. FOUR!!! No pace on Poonam's delivery, Wolvaardt steps back and drives it through the cover region for four. Thirteen off the leg-spinner's first over and it is time for a strategic time out.

VEL 71/2 in 7 overs: Right-arm medium pacer Arundhati Reddy concedes just three of her first over.

This is the highest-ever score in a powerplay in Women's T20 Challenge.

VEL 68/2 in 6 overs: SIX!!! Talk about announcing your arrival! First ball of the tournament for Navgire and she dispatches it way over deep mid-wicket.  FOUR! Poor fielding at cover by Smriti Mandhana as the ball goes through her for a boundary. SIX!!! Navgire hits it big over deep-mid-wicket.

Salma Khatun to bowl the last over of the powerplay.  Laura Wolvaardt is the new batter but it will be Navgire on strike.

VEL 50/2 in 5 overs: FOUR!!! Shafali in full flow as she comes out and hits Rajeshwari Gayakwad over mid on. FOUR!!! Shafali moves to back foot and pierces the gap between cover and mid off. FOUR!!! Straight down the ground this time from Shafali and the fielder at mid-off has no chance. OUT!!!1 Gayakwad has the last laugh as Shafali looks to sweep it only to miss the ball which thuds onto her pad and the umpires raises the finger. Shafali uses the DRS, the impact is Umpire's call and she has to walk off.

Kiran Navgire is the new batter in.

VEL 36/1 in 4 overs: Just four singles off first five deliveries. OUT!!! Yastika steps out and misses a straight one which hits the top of leg stump. Yastika out for 19.

Ten off the third over.

VEL 22/0 in 2 overs: WIDE!!! Matthews sprays one down the leg side to start things off. SAVE!!! Excellent fielding from Poonam Yadav to save one run from what looked like a guaranteed four behind square. FOUR!!! Shafali steps out and clears mid off. Eleven off it.

Hayley Matthews into the attack.

VEL 11/0 in 1 over: Renuka hits the fine channel outside the off-stump and beats Shafali's blade by a whisker. A single to follow as Shafali pushes the ball to cover.  Yastika steps out but mistimes the pull through mid-off. Sophia Dunkley overruns the ball and lets the ball skim through for FOUR. In the air and Yastika clears the mid-on fielder by a few inches for another FOUR.

Back for the chase. Shafali Verma and Yastika Bhatia at the middle for Velocity. Renuka Singh with the new ball for Trailblazers.

A couple off the third as Sneh Rana picks up the ball at long on. OUT!!! Dunkley hits it in the air and Radha Yadav takes a stunner running in from the deep on the off side. Fielder at short third man holds on.

TRA 179/3 in 19 overs: Outside edge goes behind, Matthews and Dunkley take two. FOUR!!! Full toss from Sneh Rana and Matthews sweeps it towards deep mid-wicket. FOUR!!! This time, in the air but just wide off a diving long on fielder.

This is the highest-ever team total in Women's T20 Challenge.

TRA 168/3 in 18 overs: Three singles and a wide. SIX!!! Sophia Dunkley gets it in the slot and bludgeons it over deep mid-wicket.

Deepti Sharma to bowl her third over.

TRA 157/3 in 17 overs: FOUR!!! Hayley Matthews  steps to the off side and guides the full toss from Khaka towards deep square leg for a four. FOUR!! Matthews opens the face of the bat at the last moment to chip it behind for another boundary. Sneh Rana does well to save two runs at wide long on. Direct hit from Shafali but Matthews was in and the batters steal another run. OUT!! Khaka bowls it down the leg side, Jemimah sweeps it only to find Sneh Rana at fine leg. Jemimah goes for 66 off 44.

TRA 144/2 in 16 overs: SIX!!!! Jemimah goes on one knee and sweeps it powerfully over deep square leg. DROP!!! Simran sees Jemimah step out and bowls wide, the batter hits it in the air but Radha Yadav, who had made the ground, drops it at deep extra cover. DROP!!! Another chance goes begging as Jemimah does not get enough on it but Sneh Rana at long-on fails to hold on to it. The ball goes through her hands and reaches the boundary.

Simran back for another over. Gave just four off her first over and could have had the wicket of Meghana.

TRA 128/2 in 15 overs: SIX!!!! Meghana goes down the track and slams it over Rana's head. FOUR!!!! Short from Rana, Meghana goes to backfoot and pulls it hard. OUT!!! The eventful over continues as Meghana mistimes one and Cross holds onto a simple catch at long off. Meghana departs for 73 off 47. Hayley Matthews is the new batter in. Two runs off the last three balls.

TRA 116/1 in 14 overs: Three dots to begin the over as Simran keeps it wide and out of Meghana's reach. WIDE!!! After four dots, Simran sprays one way outside off and it brings 100-run partnership for Jemimah-Meghana. DROPPED!!! Meghana goes for the big heave but only gets the outside egde. However, Khaka's day on the field goes from bad to worse as she drops a dolly at backward point. Jemimah sweeps it for a couple to get to a deserving half-century.

Simran Bahadur's right-arm medium pace replaces Khaka.

STRATEGIC TIME OUT: With seven overs left, Trailblazers will look to shift to a higher gear to post a formidable total. Remember, it needs to win by a margin of 32 runs or more to qualify for the final.

TRA 112/1 in 13 overs: SIX!!!! Straight and in the slot from Shafali, Meghana blast it over long off for a maximum. Rodrigues drives it past cover to take a double and move to 47. Thirteen of Shafali's second. This is now the second-highest partnership ever in Women's T20 Challenge.

Another over for Shafali.

TRA 99/1 in 12 overs: FOUR!!! Jemimah slices it over the in-field to get a much-needed boundary for Trailblazers after Khaka had conceded only three singles off the first three. However, Khaka finishes the over with two dot balls.

TRA 92/1 in 11 overs: Just six off Shafali's off spin. Excellent over from the youngster.

Interesting. Deepti Sharma hands over the ball to Shafali Verma.

TRA 86/1 in 10 overs: FOUR!!!! The latest of the late cuts from Jemimah and she manages to get it past the fielder at short third man. Half-century in her first game of the tournament for S Meghana as she pushes it towards long off to reach the milestone.

Fifteen off it. Expensive.

TRA 64/1 in 8 overs: Jemimah sweeps the ball to long on. FOUR!!! Quick and wide from Rana, Meghana cuts it perfectly for a boundary. Eight off it as the partnership goes past fifty. Meghana into 40s.

Sneh Rana back to bowl her second.

STRATEGIC TIME OUT: After losing the early wicket of Mandhana, Meghana and Rodrigues have steadied the ship for Trailblazers.

TRA 56/1 in 7 overs: SIX!!! Meghana muscles it over cover and it goes all the way. Nine off it.

Left-arm spin of Radha Yadav comes in from the other end.

TRA 47/1 in 6 overs: It was turning out to be a perfect first over from Rana as she had conceded just two singles off the first five deliveries but on the last one, Meghana plays a beautiful drive that finds the gap between cover and mid off. End of powerplay.

Change in bowling as Sneh Rana is into the attack with her off-spin.

TRA 41/1 in 5 overs: FOUR!!! Uppish cut from Meghana but powerful and wide enough to beat Sneh Rana at point and reach the boundary. FOUR!!! Jemimah gets the length to pull it and fielder at deep backward square leg has no chance at stopping that. Expensive over from Cross.

TRA 30/1 in 4 overs: A couple of fours by Jemimah from the first two balls of Deepti's second over - first over cover and second past mid off. A yorker from the Velocity skipper nearly gets the job done. However, Jemimah gets an inside edge and the batters comfortably steal a two. Two singles towards long on to finish the over.

TRA 18/1 in 3 overs: Meghana pulls it towards mid wicket but doesn't get the right connection and the result is just one run. OUT!!! Mandhana falls into the trap. Cross bowled it at her legs, she pulls it hard and it is a simple catch at backward square leg for Simran. Mandhana departs for one. Jemimah comes into the middle, plays it towards mid off and runs. Fortunately for her, the throw missed the stumps. A four from Meghana as she lifts it over Cross' head. DROP!! Cross provides the width, Meghana cuts it and Sneh Rana at point spills it.

Cross back for her second over.

TRA 10/0 in 2 overs: Khaka misfields again. This time at mid off and Mandhana is off the mark. Meghana drives it for another single. Tidy over from Deepti. Just two from it.

Captain against captain. Deepti Sharma with her off spin against the flamboyant left-handed Mandhana.

TRA 10/0 in 1 over: Right-handed Meghana gets the width from Cross and cuts it hard. Khaka misfields at third man and the Trailblazers convert the single into a double. A couple of fours straight back past the bowler for Meghana to give Trailblazers a dream start.

--------------

7:30 PM: Live action now. Captain Mandhana and S Meghana to open the innings for Trailblazers. Kate Cross to bowl the first over for Velocity.

7:25 PM: With five minutes to go, here's a piece on contrasting styles and approaches of Velocity batters Shafali Verma and Laura Wolvaardt, who'll be in action later tonight, by my colleague Lavanya Lakshmi Narayanan:

7:20 PM: As skipper Smriti Mandhana said after losing the toss, Trailblazers would have ideally liked to bat second as it would have had a target to aim, but now, it will have to score big and a lot will depend on Mandhana herself.

7:10 PM: No Maya Sonawane for Velocity tonight.

7:05 PM: Playing XIs

Velocity: Deepti Sharma (c), Sneh Rana, Shafali Verma, Yastika Bhatia, Laura Wolvaardt, Radha Yadav, Kathryn Cross, Kiran Prabhu Navgire, Ayabonga Khaka, Simran Dil Bahadur, Natthakan Chantham

Trailblazers: Smriti Mandhana (c), Poonam Yadav, Jemimah Rodrigues, Hayley Matthews, Sophia Dunkley, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Arundhati Reddy, Salma Khatun, Renuka Singh, Richa Ghosh, S. Meghana

7 PM: TOSS

Velocity skipper Deepti Sharma wins the toss and elects to field first.

6:55 PM: Toss in five minutes for this crucial match.

6:45 PM: Points table and qualification scenario

The Trailblazers will require a win of 32 runs or more, if they manage to post a total of 160 while batting first. Likewise, it would need to chase down a target of 160 under 16.1 overs (eventual NRR may fluctuate if winning runs come off a four or a six) to move past Velocity into the final. As for Velocity, a win would seal its spot in the final.

6:30 PM: Will Smriti Mandhana's Trailblazers be able to stop the in-form Shafali Verma tonight?

VELOCITY vs TRAILBLAZERS MATCH PREVIEW

With both Velocity and Supernovas winning a game each in the 2022 edition of the Women’s T20 Challenge, Smriti Mandhana’s Trailblazers finds itself in a tight fight for survival. The defending champion needs a win, and a comfortable one at that when it takes on an upbeat Velocity at the MCA Stadium here on Thursday.

Despite bowling out an initially explosive Supernovas side for 163 in its 20 overs, Trailblazers could not convert its gains in the field into anything with the bat. The side fell short by 49 runs, the biggest margin of defeat in the tournament’s history.

A packed batting order found it hard to keep going. Mandhana and opening partner Hayley Matthews got the side off a good start with a brisk 39-ball partnership in the first five overs, but Pooja Vastrakar struck to send both openers and Sophia Dunkley back to the hut.

READ:

Jemimah Rodrigues, who is now fighting for her place in the national team, found herself running out of partners but could have seized the opportunity a bit better herself to get her team close to the target and to make a statement about her return to form on the back of consistent league and domestic performances for the better part of the past year.

Devika Palshikar coach of Velocity felt the team was throwing away their wickets and it certainly looked that way with all the simple soft dismissals inside the circle. She will not dismiss this side though, with the kind of names and how filled with achievements their resumes are, fully expecting them to come back with a vengeance when they go up against her side in a do-or-die ‘league’ fixture.

READ:

The win underlined how well Velocity's leadership group is working. Kate Cross, the designated bowling captain, led the charge with two wickets (Priya Punia and Harleen Deol) to her name. Along with Sharma (who removed Dottin), the duo snuffed out any momentum Supernovas could manage to gather early on and consistently broke partnerships until Harmanpreet Kaur dropped anchor and steadied the side to a competitive 150-run score in its 20 overs.

Velocity will be most happy with what followed in the chase. Shafali Verma seems to have left the demons plaguing her on the field for the last year or so behind for now. Despite a few initial jitters vs Sophie Ecclestone, she took the Supernovas to the cleaners in her 33-ball 51. Laura Wolvaardt, the side's batting captain, eventually finished the chase with an unbeaten 51 herself and 10 balls to spare.

ALSO READ:

Dominant performances of this sort put the pressure back on Mandhana and Co. who need to find a way to corner Verma, especially, early on in the innings. While Velocity has the brute force of uncapped player Kiran Navgire and all-rounders who can do a fair bit of damage with the bat (Sneh Rana and Cross), these players have not had a go in this tournament yet.

Matthews and Salma Khatun were able to trouble batters with their variations, Matthews also with her speed. These two will be crucial in Trailblazers’ bid for a consecutive final appearance.

HEAD TO HEAD:

Velocity and Trailblazers have met each other twice in this tournament’s history. While the then-Mithali Raj-led side won by three wickets in 2019 in Jaipur (with Danni Wyat and Shafali Verma orchestrating that victory, the Trailblazers also managed to bowl out Velocity for a paltry 47 in 2020. Sophie Ecclestone was the aggressor-in-chief in that defeat but has moved on to Supernovas this season but Trailblazers won that game with 7.5 overs and just a wicket gone - the kind of win the side needs to stay alive this time around too.
