Chennaiyin FC has roped in centre-back Lucian Goian from Mumbai City for the upcoming season of Indian Super League (ISL).
Goian spent three seasons at the Mumbai-based outfit, joining the Islanders in 2016, wherein he led the team to its first-ever playoffs.
An integral part of its defence, Goian played over 50 matches for Mumbai City. He donned the captain's armband in the 2017-18 season and played a major role in guiding the squad to the last-four the following season.
“It feels great to sign with Chennaiyin. The coach (John Gregory) played a huge role in me coming here. When he asked me if I wish to return to India to win the ISL trophy, I simply said yes," said Goian.
"I believe Chennaiyin along with John (Gregory) are a club that knows how to win trophies, and I can’t wait to get started and give my absolute 100% on the pitch. I am confident we will do everything to make the squad a team and bring the ISL title back to Chennai."
Head coach John Gregory commented on Goian's arrival: "In Lucian (Goian), we are signing a leader who has rich experience in Indian football. His commitment and aggression on the pitch has been quite evident from his time in Mumbai."
Goian has been signed by Chennaiyin as a replacement for Mailson Alves, who has bid goodbye to the Marina Machans this year.
Mailson played three seasons at Chennaiyin, making a total of 56 appearances in all competitions and scoring eight goals in the process. He was part of the ISL title-winning team in 2015 and 2018.
