Ahead of FC Goa’s season opener against Delhi Dynamos, Zico, the coach of the Goan side, reveals that he had an offer from Manchester United to assist Sir Alex Ferguson and he almost accepted the offer. In an email interview to Sportstar, the Brazilian legend says, his countrymen in the FC Goa squad, have made the cut due to their ability and not because of any other consideration.

Question: How do you feel about the upcoming season?

Answer: We need to start well. We want to perform better than last season.

We learnt that you were asked to pick either Juan Roman Riquelme or Lucio as Goa’s marquee player. Your choice was Lucio. Why?

No one told me about Riquelme. I would have liked him (in my team) may be some years back.

Seven Brazilians in the FC Goa squad...

The Brazilian players are not in the team only because they are Brazilians. They are all good players.

Tell us about your go-to man in the midfield, Leo Moura.

He is a very good player. Very tactical! He plays on the right wing, not much of a striker, though he can score. But he passes the well and his crosses are good too.

Most of your foreign recruits are past their prime. Do you think you can still implement your attacking principles?

All of them have been playing competitive football. Leo Moura has been playing. Reinaldo has an injury, but may start the first game. Victor Simoes had a surgery and has recovered. Lucio was playing in Palmeiras. So, I think, all the players can adapt to the club’s philosophy.

Is it true that you were offered a role to assist Alex Ferguson at Manchester United?

They (Manchester United representatives) spoke with me in Brazil some years back, but I did not know if it was true or not. I would have accepted the offer with all pleasure.
