The El Clasico fixture between Barcelona and Real Madrid on Sunday saw the first-ever instance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system being used.

In the 28th minute, Barcelona striker Luis Suarez went down inside the box after being pushed from behind by Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane.

Referee Alejando Hernandez turned down the penalty appeal from Barcelona before turning to VAR after consulting with the linesman. After replays suggested that Varane had clattered into Suarez, Hernandez overturned his decision by awarding a penalty to Barcelona.

The Uruguayan duly stepped up to convert the spot kick to double the advantage for the home side.
