On an eventful day two of the Santosh Trophy National football championship, Manipur sprang a surprise on Services and Odisha staged a magnificent comeback against Karnataka in a six-goal thriller.

The defending champion, Services, was humbled 0-3 by Manipur here on Sunday night. Ngariyanbam Jenish Singh, Lunminlen Haokip and B. Sunil (own goal) were the scorers.

The first goal came in the fifth minute, following a fine through ball down the left by Ngulgoulal Singsit to Thiyam Chingkheinganba, who set up Jenish to slam the ball into the far post.

The second goal came early in the second half as Haokip headed Chingkheinganba’s corner kick in. It was going to be an uphill task for the reigning champion after that.

This match at Malappuram was far more well-contested and exciting. When Karnataka went 3-1 up in the second half, it must have felt confident of getting three points. But, Odisha fought back superbly to draw level.

The goal that gave Odisha the equaliser was an excellent one too. It came off a counter-attack, which was finished off by Chandra Muduli, who put the ball firmly into the top corner of the net.

The results:

Manipur 3 (Ngariyanbam Jenish Singh 5, Lunminlen Haokip 50, B. Sunil-og 74) bt Services 0.
Odisha 3 (Jamir Oram 15, Bikash Kumar Sahoo 65, Chandra Muduli 76) drew with Karnataka 3 (Sudheer Kotikela 29 & 62, Bavu Nishad 34).
Today’s matches: Rajasthan vs Meghalaya (Malappuram) 4 p.m.; Kerala vs Bengal (Manjeri) 8 p.m.
