American Justin Thomas was the star of the show after the opening round of the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Fresh from winning his second title this season at the Tournament of Champions, Thomas followed that up with an incredible 11-under-par 59 on Thursday.

Thomas carded eight birdies and two eagles as he became just the seventh player to shoot a sub-60 round on the PGA Tour while taking a three-stroke lead.

The 23-year-old started his round with an eagle on the par-four 10th hole and he then bogeyed the 11th, but it was mere blip on an otherwise flawless day as he played the next 16 holes in 10 under at Waialae Country Club.

Countryman Hudson Swafford ended the day three strokes adrift in second position, while South Africa's Rory Sabbatini was a shot further back.

Russell Henley - the 2013 winner - was among a group of eight players tied for fourth on six under as former world number one Jordan Spieth took a back seat in Honolulu.

Spieth posted a five-under-par 65 to open proceedings following six birdies and a bogey before he went fishing with Smylie Kaufman.

The two-time major champion is level alongside the likes of Jason Dufner and Vijay Singh.

Defending champion Fabian Gomez, meanwhile, started his title defence with a first-round 69.
