CWG 2018, Day 1: As it happened

India started its Commonwealth campaign at Gold Coast by bagging two medals in weightlifting.

5:52 pm: With that Day 1 action from Gold Coast comes to an end, with India starting off with a gold and silver. In badminton, India had a great outing but there were a few disappointments also on the the opening day. 5:50 pm: Australia breaks the women's 4x100 metres freestyle world record with a time of three minutes 30.05 seconds. Shayna Jack, Bronte Campbell, Emma McKeon and Cate Campbell lowered the previous world record of 3:30.65 set by Australia at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

5:37 pm: Meanwhile in basketball, India goes down to Cameroon 87-96 in men's prelim round match.

 

5:32 pm: After Khade, Srihari too fails to enter the finals. He finishes eighth after clocking 56.65sec in men's 100m backstroke semifinal.

5:20 pm: Ashwini Ponnappa and Ruthvika Gadde beat Palwasha Bashir/Mahoor Shahzad 21-6, 21-10, as India thrashes Pakistan 5-0 to enter quarters in mixed badminton team event.

5:07 pm: Meanwhile, Australia has demolished the world record as it won gold in the men's 4,000m team pursuit from old rivals England.

5:02 pm: Swimming - Virdhawal Khade fails to qualify for men's 50m butterfly final after finishing eighth, by clocking 24.50sec in the semifinal.

4:55 pm: The Indian men's doubles pair of Pranav Chopra and Chirag Shetty defeated Muhammad Irfan-Murad Ali  21-9, 21-15 to give India 4-0 lead against Pakistan.

4:50 pm: Weightlifting: Raja Muthupandi finishes sixth with a total lift of 266kg in men's 62kg category.

4:45 pm: Squash: Harinder Pal Sandhu loses 8-11 6-11 1-11 to Malaysia's Ivan Yuen in men's singles round of 32.

4:18 pm: Next up in Badminton is the men's doubles between India and Pakistan.

4:11 pm: Saina Nehwal beats Mahoor Shahzad 21-7 21-11! Another routine, expected win for the Indian badminton team.

4:10 pm: The Indian women's basketball team goes down fighting, losing 57-66 to Jamaica.

3:58 pm: Saina Nehwal takes the first game against Mahoor Shahzad 21-7! The Indian was at ease in the first game.

3:54 pm: Boxing: Manoj Kumar of India beats Osita Umeh 5-0 in men's 69kg round of 32 to progress to round of 16.

3:41 pm: Srikanth's win has given India 2-0 lead. Next up is Saina Nehwal against Pakistan's Mahoor Shahzad.

3:35 pm: Kidambi Srikanth wins the second game 22-20 and takes the match against Pakistan's M. Ali 21-16 22-20. Smooth sailing for the Indian badminton team!

3:27 pm: Mack Horton wins the first gold medal for Australia, at Gold Coast 2018!  He wins the 400m freestyle in 3:43.76 to beat team-mate Jack McLoughin, who came second in 3:45.21. James Guy finished third (3:45.32).

3:19 pm: Kidambi Srikanth wins the first game 21-16 against M. Ali. The second game is underway.

3:09 pm:  Raja Muthupandi successfully lifts 116kg in his third snatch attempt.

3:05 pm: The top seed in the men's badminton singles, Kidambi Srikanth, is on court, taking on Pakistan's M. Ali.

3:00 pm:  India's Saurav Ghosal loses to Jamaica's Chris Binnie in men's singles round of 32.

2:57 pm: Raja Muthupandi lifts 113kg snatch in his first attempt! What an opening!

2:45 pm: Meanwhile, Indian badminton mixed doubles team is leading Pakistan 1-0 from winning the first game, it also holds a slender two-point lead (10-8) in the second.

2:25 pm: Can Raja Muthupandi follow in the footsteps of Mirabai Chanu and P. Gururaja? The men's 62-kg weightlifting has begun.

1:55 pm: Squash: India's Saurav Ghosal wins first game 11-5 against Jamaica's Chris Binnie in men's singles round of 32.

1:50pm: Madhurika Patkar's  11-3, 11-4, 12-10 win over Chloe Thomas helps India beat Wales 3-1 in the Table Tennis team event.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s cycling team has failed to qualify in the track 4,000 metre Team Pursuit event. The India team with Deborah Herold, Amritha Reghunath, Sonali Chanu, Aleena Reji and Monorama Devi finished fifth in 5:05.668 seconds.

Table tennis team event: Madhurika Patkar and Mouma Das lost a thriller against Wales. They couldn't capitalise on the three match points they earned. India, though, still leads Wales 2-1.

Weightlifting

11:32 am: Mirabai Chanu lifts 107kg in her second attempt in clean and jerk, breaking a Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 196 kg.

 

11:30 am: Mirabai Chanu secures India's first gold medal at CWG 2018 by lifting 103kg in clean and jerk.

10:35 am: Mirabai Chanu lifts a personal best of 86kg on the third clean and jerk attempt. She has broken the Commonwealth Games record of 77kg.

Athletics

Sally Pearson, Australia's champion hurdler, withdraws from the event due to an Achilles injury.

Table tennis

8:45 am: Glory Glory! Amalraj Anthoy and G. Sathiyan register wins; doubles pair of Harmeet Desai-G. Sathiyan triumph in men’s team in Group A. India beat Trinidad and Tobago 3-0.

Swimming

8:20 am: Virdhawal Khade enters 50m butterfly semifinals (Swimming).

He participated in heat 5 with a slow start in lane six, but he finished fifth (24.52 seconds).

In men’s 100m backstroke event, Srihari Nataraj made it to the semifinal (56.71 seconds).

Badminton

7:55 am: Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Siki Reddy beat Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage 21-12, 21-14 in women’s doubles mixed team Group A game.

Saina Nehwal (India) beats Madushika Dilrukshi Beruwelage (Sri Lanka) 21-8, 21-4 in women's singles mixed team Group A match.

Satwik Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty (India) beat Dinuka Karunaratna and Buwaneka Goonethilleka (Sri Lanka) 21-17, 21-14 in men's doubles mixed team Group A match.

Pranaav Chopra and Ruthvika Gadde (India) beat Sachin Dias and Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa (Sri Lanka) 21-15, 19-21, 22-20.

India beat Sri Lanka 5-0.

Weightlifting

8 am: Gururaja wins silver in the men’s 56kg weightlifting event, handing India it’s first medal at the event. He lifted 111 kg and 139kg, after failing in his first two attempts.

Muhammad Izhar (Malaysia) claims gold (261kg) and Chaturanga Lakmal (Sri Lanka) settles with bronze (248kg).

Hockey

7:45 am: The eves lose 2-3 to Wales in their women's hockey opener.
